    Default Gaku Pachicounter Timer Question.

    I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this with their Gaku counters.

    I purchased two from Musky and am very happy with them, but I have a bit of an issue and I want to know if I did something "wrong".

    Both counters count and calculate balls shot, won and difference properly. But the timer circuits on both are a little weird.

    On one counter the "Dots" on the clock don't illuminate and on the other counter has dots that blink. But that's not even whats really weird.

    The one in which the dot's don't illuminate, the clock is one second slow every minute, where as the one that has the blinking dots, the clock is dead on accurate.

    I imagine the timing circuits are identical.

    I don't think this is some sort of polarity issue because I wired them the same.

    Does anyone else have this issue? I'm not making a big deal out of it. I mean being slow a second means that the clock is only a minute off every hour so I'm not super concerned, but I'm wondering if I did anything wrong. Does anyone else have a counter where the dots don't illuminate and the timer is slow?

    Your opinions and viewpoints on this is greatly appreciated.

    The GAKU counters don't have a "real time" clock, it is just an approximation. The timer is a function of the programmable CPU.

    I don't have an explanation for the colon blinking or not blinking. Could be a bad LED segment; it is difficult to test the LED in place and probably easier to just buy another counter.

    Ok, that makes sense. If it is just an approximation and not an actual "clock" then I won't pursue it further. The blinking Dot's don't bother me at all as the time display is actually easier to read without the dots because the one with the dots has a lot more "flicker" and is dimmer.

    I just wanted to make sure I didn't do something wrong. I rarely use the clock anyway so a second a minute is really inconsequential. Pachinko is not a game that requires "split second" timing.

    Sorry to hear you are having problems, could be as simple as a bad solder joint on the circuit board. I will look into the ones I have working and see what I come up with. Let me know what you would like to do, we'll make things right if you wish.

    Musky,

    I don't see any need for anything to be done on your part. I've noticed an inconsistency between the two counters I got and wanted to ensure it's not a user error.

    If the "slow" counter dies in the next couple of weeks, then that's a horse of a different color..

    I'm on the verge of getting a new model 'a' and I am much more interested in purchasing an additional two units (one as a spare) than I am concerned over 1 minute an hour time discrepancy on an otherwise perfectly functioning unit.

    In fact I only noticed it when I was running comparisons between my two machines to try and get a baseline of which one is "looser".

    I appreciate the fine support you have offered Musky. It's good to know you stand behind the product.

    Here is some additional information about the some of the discreet components on the GAKU counter:

    Qty = 1 Atmega 48V-10PI; Atmel 0553
    Microcontroller with 4K Bytes In-System Programmable Flash
    This is the main CPU

    Qty = 2 M'SIA 0630U ULN2003AG darlington transistor array
    Qty = 2 TI 64FHYEK E4 SN74HC164N counter shift register
    These 4 chips seem to be driving the LED displays

    Qty = 1 L7805CV voltage regulator

    That is correct, the colons are suppose to blink. I have 5 more kits due for shipment and I will be checking those and all others before they go out the door. Thanks P.Opus for bringing this up, first one to be acting up that I know of but a little QC can't hurt before they ship.

    Musky,

    I'm going to want two more. It may need to be a couple of weeks because I have a lot of work to do before I'm ready for them. When I buy the other two, I may retire the "flaky" one as the spare.

    I figured the colons were supposed to blink when I saw the second one acting like that.

    Would reversed polarity have anything to do with it. I can't see how. I double checked the connections before plugging it in. I'll check again. Usually I have found on other LED's that reversed polarity will not even work.

    The flaky one goes through the self test and the colons don't energize during the self test at power on either. Ironically the loss of the "colons" causes the timer to be just as bright as the other three displays, where the one that's working "properly" is noticeably dimmer than the other displays.

    I am not sure why the lack of blinking colons would cause the timer to lose time though.

    Like I said, when I buy the other two, then I will likely retire the flaky one so that the three counters are consistent in look.

    any way to not use the timer on the board? is there a way it can retain memory when you turn the machine off?
