Out of curiosity, how can you tell it's a model A without looking at the back?

The little rectangular window at the lower left corner of the playfield. This window shows that the jackpot tray is full, and safe for you to load with balls. If it wasn't full...you wouldn't play. Just like on a Model B...you can see if it is safe to play by seeing that the center jackpot is full by the balls in the center feature. For some reason, you can't see the jackpot balls in a Model C. Maybe the manufacturers felt that by now, the machines were SO reliable that seeing the jackpot balls was unnecessary.

Not all Model B's had the ability to see the balls within the center feature. I had the shark diver 1975/76 Nishijin Model B and there was absolutely no way to see balls behind the center feature.

A lot of B's do have the ability to see balls behind the center feature, however.

You are right about the "A" though. The window in the lower left is the give away. B's and C's have their jackpot trays behind the center feature as you said.

Same with my 1975 Nishijin JAL Model B, though I do think I know what you mean from some of the other cells I've seen.

But it's nice to know that a model A can be easily identified from the front as well as the back.
