    Default vintage machine glass?

My machine a 1973 Nishijin Shiroi-Kamome had a broken plastic/ acrylic panel covering the play area. I read somewhere that this was originally glass.
If that is the case does someone have the specs on the glass. I would assume a 16 x 16 3mm tempered would do?
Also there are two slots, do people typically have two panes?

I see the following site says it does 1973 Nishijin Shiroi-Kamome : Pachinko Planet, Antique and Vintage Pachinko Machines

    Thanks

While there are others here more knowledgeable than I, I found it first so I'll jump in.

3mm translates to just under 1/8", so that sounds right for thickness. Just take the piece of plexi out and have the local glass shop copy what you have for shape.

I think that tempered would be a waste of time and money for this project, but others would know better.

The machines had 2 pieces of glass to keep the patrons from manipulating the balls with magnets. So unless you're going to cheat on your own machine, you only need the inner one.

    HTH's.

I thought the glass should be 4mm.

Some put glass on the inner playing field slot, and plexiglas on the outer slot for safety. Especially if children are around.

I recently replaced both pieces of glass on a machine. Was able to get the glass and have it cut to size for around $5 a piece.

    Dog gone metric system!

    3mm = .118"
    1/8" = .125"
    4mm= .157"
    3/16" = .188"

Since they were built in Japan, I guess we can safely assume they used either 3 or 4 mm. I don't think 3/16" would fit. Guess I'll have to check it with the calipers when I get into the shop tonight.

I use the standard single pane glass cut and sold at either Home Depot or Ace Hardware. It works perfectly.

I use 1/8" material. I think 3/16" is too big and 1/16" is way too thin so just use the 1/8" it is enough.

Took the calipers to the Dai-ichi tonight, and got around .150 at its widest point. You might be able to force the 4mm in, and there's no way the 3/16" will go. Looks like your best bets are 1/8" for us U.S.ians, and 3 mm for the rest of the world.

    Thanks to everyone.
I guess no one is using tempered glass if they are buying cut pieces at home depot etc.

I remember a member mentioning that tempered glass would not be a good idea on a machine. I cannot remember why though.

I'd be curious to know their reasoning. Tempered is very strong, unless you hit it on the edge. Then it kind of 'explodes'. I just don't think it's necessary in a pachinko machine.

However, I really Really REALLY like clam's idea of acrylic in the outer frame if there are kiddos (and some adults I know) around.

I always use glass. I love the sound it makes on the inside piece and I feel like it looks better than acrylic. However, with kids involved it is probably a lot safer to go with acrylic on the outside piece.

I wish I could find the old thread but I seem to remember now that tempered glass would have a tendency to shatter.

There should be lots of threads regarding pachinko glass, a search for 'tempered' may bring up some of them too

here's one of the old threads that says something about Tempered glass can't be modified once tempered

True. It must be cut to size, then tempered. Once tempered, any attempt to cut or drill...poof!

yep I work with 10 and 12mm glass, Its heavy and it don't half make a noise when it implodes.
Ask our engineer who broke a 10ft x 5ft one in Kings Cross underground station at 11:00 at night. Sounded like a bomb going off. Not a sensible thing to do in London

Pachinko machines take two pieces of glass for the playing field covers. The inside cover is a 1/8” plate glass (This is for sound insulation and to keep the balls on the playing field), and the outside cover is a 1/8” Plexiglas (This is to absorb shock and for protection). There are two grooves in the metal frame around the playing field to hold the glass in place. This is so people can’t use magnets to cheat at the game. The machine will work with just the inside glass installed. Most hardware stores or glass shops can cut an replacement glass or Plexiglas.

    Nishijin Single Shoot glass size is 15.9”X 20.0” = 15 29/32"X 20" = 404mmX508mm
    Nishijin Model A glass size is 15.9”X 17.9” = 15 29/32"X 17 29X32" = 404mmX455mm
    Nishijin Model B glass size is 15.9”X 16.0” = 15 29/32"X 16" = 404mmX407mm
    Nishijin Model C glass size is 16.0”X 16.0” = 407mmX407mm

Thanks for all the info. I have installed a 4mm 16" x 16" piece of glass on the interior and moved the acrylic I had previously bought to the exterior. It does sound different!!
