    Smile GAKU Counter Face Plates

This is the beginning of one of my counter projects. A housing that holds the GAKU counter.

The idea is to have a wood frame (not shown) with a removable, clear, laser cut, 3mm thick, acrylic plastic face plate.

One can put custom art work on a piece of paper behind the clear face plate, to suit your pachinko machine.

Should be ready to ship this month! Minimal assembly required, includes all the required hardware, maple - ready to laminate, paint or stain.

This is a picture of the face plate with the tan protective film still on...

This picture shows two face plates, one with the film removed (clear)
Face Plate with tan protective film off CLEAR.jpg

A paper insert will cover up the printed circuit boards, one can customize the paper insert to match the machine.

Neat idea you have there. I was planning to build just a basic wood box for my counter. But if you get your pricing down cheap enough I think I might go with one of yours. Can you tell us the overall size of the face plate / box?

    Overall housing size (wood frame) is 20-1/4" x 6-3/4" x 1" thick.

    Face plate is 15" x 3" x 3mm thick with radiused corners.

Have hardware with cool, rounded, 3/8" +/- plastic screw caps, your choice of black or chrome. Someone with your art skills can make a very cool template to go behind the clear plastic to tastefully coordinate with your machine.

What is a "low" price? ;-) You should have a good feel for the cost of just the wood, but how many hours would it take you to set the wood frame up on a CNC router and set up the plastic on a laser cutter? Waste a few prototypes and end up with something that meets your standards of excellence? Get all the hardware and spacers for a clean set up allowing air flow.

Actually, if you do your own thing, here are the caveats: the LED numbers vary slighly from board to board, they were soldered on to a PCB, so it's close but thet vary up to 1 mm in every direction. They won't just bend one way or the other.
There are two capacitors on the front of the board that need to be folded over, otherwise they stick out too far.
There needs to be a space between the boards, or they will short each other out.

Max, I think I've said this before... but I'm a fan of yours. Your comments / advice for my projects seems to always be "spot on" and I wonder why didn't I think of that! So, please fire back! What are you looking for in a counter?

The kit sounds perfect and I am sure there are enough of these counters around that you should be able to move quite a few of these. Count me in.

    Thanks for the sizes.

So how do you figure it is going to be put together? Is the face plate just the single piece of plexi? If so how do you put the artwork on; would you need two pieces of plexi to sandwich it in between or do you expect people to get it printed on vinyl and put it on like a sticker?

Also what would be your cost on just the plexi face plate? As I know some members have some wood working skills and can make their own box. Ideally I would see myself a buyer of one fully complete with plexi face and wood box for $20 or less. Maybe about $10 or less for just the plexi.

Also as for the variance don't know what you could really do about that. I would say just increase the whole size but then you might have odd sized gaps. I think increasing the whole size might be your only option though. Also have you thought about how to hold the display in place? I would think screwing it to the plexi plate with some nylon washers in between would be the easiest way.

Oh and this is just my personal preference but could you possibly custom cut the sheets of plexi? As I was expecting to use a push button like this Red Happ Style Long Arcade Button Ships from USA | eBay on my counter. (I mean come on who doesn't want to push the big red button? I mainly chose it because I hate that cheap little one that comes with it.)

Let us know what your thinking about. We are all here to give you our input.

Also can you give me the sizes of the curves and the letters in the pic below of the plexi piece so I can start thinking of some artwork.

Love the big red button! Don't know much about it though. Do you happen to know the mounting hole size? 24 mm?

Plexiglass can be cut with a knife, a band saw, a router and many other ways. It's not the easiest material to work with, as you probably know. The pieces shown were laser cut. I don't have a laser cutter and ordered them. There are size restraints and shipping is a big part of the cost. I get 10 at a time. Thinner plexiglass is available but doesn't ship well, have had experience with breakage already...

I'll attach a PDF, to scale, in a zip folder. I can give you the dimensions you ask for, but a paper template might be easier for you to work with. The paper is supported by the wood behind it. A cover stock material works best.

More details to follow, as it comes together...

Okay now I get how your assembling this. Now it all makes sense.

I'll get you the size of the push button later today. I want to say it is about 1" to 1.5" in diameter for the hole size.

    Thanks For everything Carl

Here is something I came up with really fast. I really didn't know what to do so I just started drawing lines. I will play with it some more later.

Looks good. I would think I would tie in the design to the machine it is set up for.

Yeah it would make more sense but I was just bored and needed something to do.

Maybe if I get a little time I'll start making one up for you specifically.

This is similar to what Gaku was doing with his Pachinko Game Machine cabinets. When I acquired the remaining counters from him he gave me a PDF templet for the face plate. I could never get it to print out right but I can send it to you CarlW if you like ( or anyone else who is interested). I'm sure I've posted a few of his game cabinets I have that show how he did his ( Popeye and Spiderman machines to name a few). Anyway, keep up the good work!

Ok, this is a link to an earlier post showing Gaku's faceplates and also how I assemble the boards. With the kit I include 12 little plastic "tubes" to use as stand offs and to separate the circuit boards. Hope that helps.

I'd like to see the pdf. Sent you a pm with my email address - THANKS.

In your pictures, it looks like there is a little space around the 7 segment LEDs. That is what I ran into as well, better to have it a little loose than too tight.

Is your Popeye face plate metal?

What are the spacer tube lengths? Thanks!

CarlW, the face plates are plastic. Gaku had a machine that would laser cut them. The spacers are about1/4 inch. I'll send the PDF file out to those that want it or post it here.
