While it would be workable, I agree with Max. You'd have to have a pretty good size battery, and I think you'd just get frustrated at how often it would need recharging/replacing.

More technical dribble: If the counter does have a 5v regulator (and I suspect it does), you need to give it some 'wiggle room'. Don't feed it 5.5 volts and expect it to maintain 5v regulated power. For reliable operation, I wouldn't try to run it on less than 8 or 9v, usually 12v. That would be a nice sized gel-cell. Secondly, from the pics I've seen, these counters use LED displays. Of all the components on the board, these are the power suckers. Anywhere from 5 to 20ma PER SEGMENT. That means displaying the number 8 could take anywhere from 45 to 140ma of current. If the digits are multiplexed (lighted one at a time in sequence, but done so fast the human eye can't detect it), that helps, but they are still battery killers. That's what makes LCDs so popular in watches. They don't emit light, they reflect it. The energy usage is minimal.

OK, if I haven't bored you all to sleep by now, go back to enjoying your pachinkos.

Thank you for all of the advice. I believe the wall wart that powers the counter is 15V.

Is it an AC or DC wall wart?

The diodes I installed ended up failing when I was shooting my video of the machine. I didn't post the video due to some inappropriate language.

I had a day off yesterday and replaced the diodes with larger rectifier diodes and everything is working great. Shot a couple of videos that I will be posting once I do a little editing. Running into trouble though with my iPhone picking up my voice in the videos. I may need to borrow a friend's camera to shoot a better video.

I think I will start a new thread with step by step directions on installing the cheat switch and Gaku counter, hopefully it will be a good reference for anyone wanting to make these modifications to their Powerflash.

I think you really need a larger capacity transformer for the game, like about 2 amps. That should give you plenty of head room. .5amp doesn't seem like enough to keep working for long. Even running incandescent lights on a vintage takes up to an amp of DC power @10volts.

You may be right. So far everything is working great. If any problems crop up later I will look into upgrading the transformer. I plan on replacing the lights with LED's pretty soon which may help. The transformer I went with was from Pachinko Planet. It said it was for my Powerflash and with my limited electronics knowledge, I went with it.

Are we talking about the suppression diodes on the solenoids/relays that failed? I'm curious as to what diode you used that failed, and what you replaced them with. A good choice would have been the 1N4007. They're plentiful, cheap, and are rated plenty high enough for the job.

    For future reference.

These are the ones I used:

    3A Barrel Diodes : Diodes | RadioShack.com

These were the ones that I had used originally but they ended up failing:

    1N4004 Micro 1-Amp Rectifier Diode : Diodes | RadioShack.com

I'm surprised. 4004's aren't rated as high a voltage as 7's, but they still should have worked.

In what way did they fail? Usually, when diodes go bad, they go to dead short, causing blown fuses and loss of magic smoke!

The 4004's are the ones I used first that failed, the 7's are the ones I replaced them with. When I tested the 4004's after my problem came back they were allowing current to pass both ways through them. Never saw any smoke.

I don't have an explanation. Of course my electronics knowledge is very limited.

The 4007's are rated almost 3 times higher in most categories and so they will take higher peak voltage hits. Here's the data sheet for the 1N4000 series diodes:
