    Default My first restoration

I got a machine in really bad shape and decided to take it apart, clean it up and put a custom background on it. I am finished with the front of the machine, but have not yet started putting anything on the back. I am a little nervous that I spent all kinds of time making the front of the machine look nice only to not get the payouts working. For the front I roughed up the plastic, primed it and then spray painted it after making a stencil for each dragon. Finally I put a few layers of polyurethane over the paint. It seems like it will hold up. I guess time will tell. I was hoping that I could get some advice if I run into trouble putting the parts on the back. Everyone on the forum seems extremely helpful.

    Welcome to PachiTalk!

Looks like you did a great job with front of the machine. I love the dragon theme. Keep us posted with the progress on the mechanics. There are a lot of very helpful members here. I have no doubts that it will be working very soon.

    to Pachitalk

That is a nice looking 1973 Nishijin Model B. How did you do the background exactly? You said you made a stencil so did you paint it on?

If you have any questions for us feel free to ask. And once again Welcome to PT.

After pulling everything off of the front, I lightly sanded the background then primed it with a paint designed for plastics. I then cut out some stencils out of frisket paper which an art teacher friend gave me. It is a low tack paper that goes right on the surface. I just made the cutouts with an exacto blade stuck it to the surface and spray painted it . I did each dragon one at a time, so that was a several day process. I also got some help sticking the stencils on the surface from my wife who is much more careful and patient than I am. After that I put a few coats of poly on the paint to prevent it from scratching. I'm not entirely sure it will hold up, but it seems like it will - at least in a few tests that I did. One of the many mistakes I made was that I taped off the stickers on the front, but forgot to remove the tape before I put the poly on. I ended up having to remove the tape with an exacto. I think it will be ok because they are on a part of the face where the balls don't travel. I made at least one mistake for every good thing I did, but I'm happy with how things turned out, and I'll do better next time if I ever decide to do this again.

I think you did a great job. I will be curious to hear how the poly holds up. Looking forward to seeing your future projects.

I'm not sure how well the poly will hold up. Just make sue you don't leave it in direct sun or else it might start flaking that off. Also just curious did you use water or oil based? Because the oil based should hold up a little better.

I had to use water based because the paint I used was oil based. I didn't want that bleeding into the poly.

For my test I put it on a board and just kept dropping hundreds of marbles on it. The only thing I'm worried about is that the board did get dents in it and I don't think the playface will "give" like my board did which may leak to cracking.

Of course I'll post how it holds up. I redid the machine for my five year old nephew so I'm sure it will get lots of use.

I did get all the payouts working, and I'm pretty excited. I have one question though. At the bottom of the back where the balls exit into the tray there is a panel that can swing back and forth. It is held in by a pin and it has a wire attached to it. I can't figure out why the panel is there or where the wire should go. Can someone help me with that. I included a picture of the wire here. Thanks in advance.

the wire in your picture is one the wrong side..

when your playing your pachinko the winning balls are paid to the front shooter tray.. If you win allot of balls thouse winners are diverted to the bottom tray... if that bottom tray backs up to much a plunger will push the wire out and deactivate the shooter keeping the machine from jaming up...

in home use this realy happens cause home player usualy dont ahve enought Pachinko balls to keep winning and filling the machine...

Just thought I would let everyone know that the machine has held up for the last month very well. So far so good (fingers crossed). I also rewired the machine and replaced the bulbs with 3 volt led lights. I think they should last a long time and I thought the batteries would basically last forever as well (replaced the power source with 2 AA batteries)
