    Default So what is this? Vintage? Modern? Both? A Grail machine?

    According to Stickers it expired from service in 54 - 12. So Dec of 1979. Which makes it built in Dec. 1978 if I read my Pachinko interpretation of stickers correctly. It has an electronic shooter, Vintage Playboard and what is that in the middle? A Roulette game?

    Any info on this machine and what it should be classified as would be appreciated.DSC01835.jpgDSC01836.jpgDSC01838.jpg

    That is a very cool looking vintage..It looks like a competitor to Nishijins Power Roulette!!

    Its cool to see these machines as they transitioned from vintage all mechanical machines to early electric moderns in the late 70s and early 80s..

    Is the shooter electronic...shooting one ball at a time? Or do you turn it and it mechanically flips several balls at a time? It seems that I have seen such a shooter, but I could be wrong. Comments are welcome.
    I'm not addicted to Pachinkos. I can quit at any time. Did I tell you about the three machines that I have on the way?

    Looks like a power roulette without the stop button,very neat!
    I agree with MrGneiss that it seems to be like a response from Sankyo saying "If Nishijin can make one,We can to"

    I have never seen a Sankyo Power Roulette.

    Though it does seem like it was built cheap and fast, as there isn't much detail put into the wheel. Though it is one cool machine.

    100 machines and counting...

    Very cool... so do the colored led's around the roulette wheel "spin" when you land in a pocket? And does where they land have any bearing on the payout?

    If its like the Nishijin, when you get a ball in the top pocket the wheel should start spinning (perhaps stopping on its own with this machine?)
    If it stops on 2, two tulips would open,
    3 = three tulips
    5 = five tulips

    Wheel does indeed spin and stop on it's own. I have not tried it recently (32 Years) but will shortly. I can't remember what it does once the wheel stops but opening the tulips sounds right.

    The other question was the "shooter" It turns clockwise and fires balls as long as it's turned and there are balls in the tray. The is a small button that will stop the firing while the knob is turned allowing for single shot performance. The amount you turn the knob affects how far the ball will travel. Pretty typical I imagine?

    How to classify it is subjective for the most part. Like much of pachinko history, its mostly the forum's collective best guess as there doesn't seem to be an authoritative account in English anywhere.
    That's an interesting machine to be sure and it closely resembles the Nishijin Power Roulette. On the Nish, the roulette wheel doesn't spin, only the lights around it did and that was caused by getting a ball in one of the 3 bonus pockets. Pressing the stop button caused the "spinning" light to stop on the number 1,3, or 5 which were arranged around the wheel. The number stopped on would dictate how many tulips were electrically opened.
    Yours doesn't appear to have a stop button so maybe the computer decides.
    Also, the Nishijin came in both electro or manual shooter. I preferred the manual but the electric one was novel.

    No Video..yet...

    I tested it. It has a few problems. Shooter loader has a broken piece that prevented the balls from loading. After taking it apart I found I could attach part of it and the balls now load reliably. However there is now nothing to prevent the balls from loading in an upper tray empty condition. Not a problem as this machine will receive light use and I'm aware of the issue. Shooting spring is weak. I have it adjusted to it's tightest but on full power the balls just reach the top center set of pins. The first time it hit a payout everything worked fine. After that nothing. I believe the problem was a rusty ball which I finally figured out how to clear and now the payout is working. As for the roulette wheel. The wheel itself spins. The lights behind it are stationary. No stop button including the stop firing button so it goes until it stops on its own. The numbers DO correlate to the number of tulips that open however the function is inconsistent I hit 5 and 3 opened, I hit 3 and one opened. Then I hit 3 again and 3 opened. I think the machine just needs to be played some so the tulips "loosen up"

    It is a FUN Machine but a real ball eater. That auto shooter can really pump out the balls!

    There was definitely a transition period from right about 1973 to 1980 where shooting knobs were introduced You can occasionally find 1973 Nishijins with both. My understanding of the history was that the manufacturers wanted to use the knobs, but the player base was adamant that they preferred the flippers. The reason was, the serious gamblers had trained for years and become very talented and efficient at using the flippers to actually earn a decent income playing the machines. The introduction of the knob required a who new learning curve, and was mistrusted. Pachinko parlors that placed knob-based machines in their establishments basically wasted the space because no one would play them, and if they filled the parlor with nothing but knobs, people would just go across the street to the parlor that still used flippers.

    It was not until the early 1980's that the knob gained universal acceptance, as the flashy electronic machines with the complex jackpot and payout strategies were produced with only a knob. Thus the transition was complete, from mechanical to electronic, and from flipper to knob. The vintage machines with both still show up for sale occasionally, and look like they could be fun to try. I have never gotten my hands on one of the hybrids yet to mess with.

    I have a 1975 Nishijin with the electric shooter... and my experience with that would have had me siding with the flipper crowd at the time. That 1975 electric shooter has the accuracy of a 16th century blunderbuss - its all over the place. While the modern ones can stick to a relatively consistent location, this one pretty much has a spread that covers about 75% of the board. Maybe if I grease it up a bit... It does sound like a jackhammer...
