    Default help with board

This is my PM to David R. and his reply. No setting in the CP that I see. And I set my computer to have the cookies stay longer before the computer cleans them out. No luck. I come home open new posts there are a decant amount, read some. Close out the browser then come back in a few hours and all gone! I look in main section and they are all grey as if I read them. I did not change anything. The only thing that was done was the computer guy had to fix a template folder that was bad in Word. He must have shut some things down because my screen saver was off when I got the computer back. Other that that I don't know what could be different. Any help would be appreciated! Laz.

Same thing happens to me. I really don't know what it is. All I can figure is it is a cookie issue.

Gets frustrating I know. I am looking into it and have been for several weeks with no luck.

Maybe there is a setting in the User Control Panel.

The only difference on my end is that the computer guy had to fix some bad files in Word for me. He says he did not do anything with IE or my forum. Can you help me?

I read about a problem like this in the vB support forum. There is an automatic log off time out. I think the default on this is 15 min. But I believe it has been cranked up to a full hour on our board.

If there has been no activity within an hour the auto log off removes you from the list of people currently on the site and marks all your posts as read, just as if you had manually logged off. I think there are some differences between a manual log off and an auto log off, like you might not have to log back on when you come back, but the key point here is that it does mark your posts as read.

From what I read over at vB forum, no one over there has found any way around this problem. That's just the way it is. You could go to an even longer time out, but the author of the program recommended against that.

Gwarzin is right. You have one hour from your last activity on the forum before all your posts are read. If you walk off and leave it for a couple of hours expect the unread posts to be marked read.

That is simply the way it is at the moment. VBulletin is going to introduce in a later version a fix for this, but at this time, it is what it is. Just remember that if you walk off, your one hour timer begins to tick. Either learn Elevlyn Wood methods or come back in 30 minutes or log in more often.

If you use firefox an easy way to see if its the browser is to go to Tools_Options_Privacy_Cookies and make sure theyt are set to keep until they expire. I have had no problems.

Try going away for a half hour and coming back. Are the unread posts still there?

Now go away for about an hour and 15 minutes and come back. Are the posts now all marked as read?

If that's what's happening, then the board is behaving just like it always has - at least for me. If something different is happening, then we need to look into this problem a little deeper.

If the unread post used to stay marked as unread, even if you'd been gone for more than an hour, I'd love to figure out what you were doing before to make that happen. Because it shouldn't happen, and I've been trying to figure out some way around that.

Just a thought....By default the software had the newest message up top (i.e. first post was newest). I wonder if by changing it to the reverse it possibly effected things???

For a very slow message base, this might be an option. But here where they move rather quickly, you'd always be reading the last post first and have to wait to find out what someone is talking about.

I like the fact we switched it back to more traditional.

Now we could switch it back to the way it was to start with, with the persons avatar and name at the top of the post instead of on the side..

    Thoughts anyone?
