Harbor Freight carries cheap rock tumblers that would work well for ball cleaning. These machines tend to break their belts after several weeks of continuous operation. That's probably more of an issue for rock tumbling (which takes 3-6 weeks) than ball cleaning (which takes 2 hours). In any case, the belts are available on eBay for a couple of bucks.

Here's a link to the single:

    http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=46376

    and the double:

You can order online for shipment or they have many local stores.

Just as an experiment I thought I would try a cement mixer, seemed like a good idea.

    Ingredients:
    I cement mixer
    15 000 used pachinko balls
    1 pair ear plugs

Plug in, stand back and wait for 15000 shining balls to peek out at you.
    Hmmm
I now have 15000 rustless but dusty balls so back to the duster
And 40 neighbours banging at my door.
    1,2,3,4,5,6,7,.........14993 left to clean

Hang on ....with so many neighbours come round I wonder if they will help!

When I bought my first Pachinko, the seller told me to "just put the rusty balls in an old sock and shake them". I laughed at him but tried it and removed all the surface rust. I wouldn't want to do too many this way but a few at at time seem to work ok.

When they were imported in the 70s that what the instruction sheets said to do, I remember lots of times cleaning my pachinko balls in an old sock. Works ok for 200-300 but any more than that an a tumbler is the way to go

Using the Harbor Freight (3lb ) tumbler, suggested by Arby One Canarby & a bag of reptile bedding, aka: crushed walnut shells, I have been cleaning my P. balls that were sent with my vintage machines for the last couple of days.

Some of them were rusty & some were just a dark color. Ive found that just a few hours dosent really do the job as well as Id like. They were OK but not great & the dark ones were still pretty much dark. But I forgot them in my garage overnight & after 20 hrs of tumbling they were much better. Go figure!

I think 20 hrs are probably too many but I think maybe 8 to 10 would be better for these older balls that have been sitting around in coffee cans for the past 20 years.

But the bottom line is the Harbor Freight tumblers do a good job. Ill have to keep an eye on that belt problem someone mentioned...

Are you talking about me or Arby?

Actually, all my P-balls look almost new. And thanks to the tumbler I got from Arby all my tokens are now clean, and the majority are nice and shiny too!

    Thanks, Arby!

I had heard that before also.

I hate to admit it but that is what I have done(old sock) and with success. If a ball is real rusty I just toss it. I think over the past two years I have tossed maybe 3 or 4 total.

Due to how many balls Arby has though shaking them in a sock would take forever so what I think someone should try is:

Fill your dryer 1/2 full with white socks then insert all of your pachinko balls into the dryer let the dryer run for 1 hour and then report the results here. If you want you could even throw some walnut shells into the mix.

Yeah sure, report that you wrecked your dryer by having all those balls bouncing around in there.

Of course you were joking, right RKnarr? I am shopping for a new washer and dryer now. The set I want is $2400.00 on sale....and then they sit on pedestals that are not included in the price. $300 bucks for the pedestals...that is what the washers and dryers used to cost.

I do now! I waited a long time to get it though. My washer right now is a $250.00 scratch and dent model that I've had for ten years and the dryer was a hand-me-down.... Now I'm going for the good stuff (if a washer and dryer could ever be considered good stuff).
