I wish I had known about this sooner - I wouldn't have made plans. This is roughly 20 minutes from my house.

So here's my report now that I've left the area and am currently touring wine country and drinking too much. In short, the pinball expo was amazing. If you've never played pinball or cared to own one, an event like this will change your mind. 400+ machines of every type and genre. I couldn't get my fill of EM's with their simple rules, challenging play, and great art. I played rare games that I've only seen in pictures and had a ball with this much pinball related Americana under one roof. There was also all the latest modern pins as well as a new pinball manufacturer, Jersey Jack. They unveiled their very first pin which is The Wizard of Oz. Also plenty of other old school arcade games like antique pins, etc. Saw lots of people that I've seen in various pinball documentaries, met the artist (Wade Krause) who made my beautiful Kings and Queens repro playfield, and sat next to Gary Stern this morning at breakfast. Krause was also commissioned by the Smithsonian to restore a pachinko as part of its collection.
So the show is for 3 days, all machines are set on free play so you can play till your fingers bleed. Friday the first day, is the best as far as people go since most arrive that night. I had rows upon rows of machines at my disposal with not many others around. There's also many seminars going on profiling pinball history, maintenance, personalities, etc. the typical American under a certain age really doesn't have an idea how common pins once were and how big of a part of our culture they were until you attend a show like this and see how many people are fanatical about their legacy and future. Very cool to see.
I found and played TTC's machine, Blue Chip and thought the theme was great and a fun game to play. Surrounding all the machines were all the vendor tables as well as a concession stand.
The pics are dark since the room is kept dim to enhance the lights on the machines.ImageUploadedByTapatalk1348351539.155999.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1348351560.094660.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1348351577.622791.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1348351602.357055.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1348351621.130556.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1348351638.123924.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1348351658.289406.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1348351680.631034.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1348351697.377505.jpg

Above post has pics of a new King of Diamonds that is electronic but recreated the sights and sounds of the original EM version. The original is one of Gottlieb's greatest pin. I have the add a ball version, Diamond Jack.

That hotel is where I stayed. Nice digs and you can't beat it for convenience. I planned to see how things went as far as how many days I stayed there. Like pachinko, I'm very particular and for the most part, only like one category of machine. In the world of pachinko it's of course arrangeballs-everything else holds no interest for me and it's the same with pins. I much prefer vintage over modern although locally I do play some moderns here:
    groundkontrol.com
My point is that I played EMs all day Friday and Sat morn, bought some souvenirs and rolled out which is why I figured would happen. Here's the latest WOZ vid from the show
    PinballNews WoZ PPE1 - YouTube
I think there's more code tweaking to be done and it seems pinheads are divided. RGP is not moderated nor politically correct so you can get the real buzz over there.
I didn't see the latest Stern but it's easy enough to find out what it is on RGP, Pinside, or their website. I think it might be X Men and if so, Marco specialties had 4 of them in their booth.
It was a great show and I'll definitely be back although there was talk of hosting it at another venue but apparently the same was said last year.
