I ran across this link to one person's view of Japan. It is quite interesting!

The gentleman's name is Dave Ahlman.

Anyone planning to visit Japan or to establish business contacts would benefit from reading his posts and viewing his photos.

It's a nice site with lots of good pictures. As the author has pretty much stated at the beginning, it the view of an American who hasn't been in the country very long. His point of view certainly leans that way. Some typical examples would be his view of gender roles and open toilets.

The exotic aspect of it all wears off, and it all seems pretty normal after a while. In fact, in a lot of ways I like it better than Western society. I actually like gender roles in Japan. I hate feminism, and I like the way Japanese women are. Japanese women on the whole seem a lot happier than Western women, too. I'd hate for Western influence to come and ruin it. That's just one example, there are a lot of other great things about this country.

Right now my girlfriend's daughter is in the middle of what is hoped a full student exchange with her daughter going to Japan after the current visit by this exchange student from Japan.
After talking with this young lady (17) from Japan(that is visiting here for 2 weeks) it is apparent that what you are saying is true and that from what she says women/teenage girls are very happy in Japan (at least as far as in her area that she lives in (country side (?). She however has never been to Tokyo. So I would imagine that it might be somewhat different in Tokyo versus other less populated areas ?
Get this : She had never heard of or seen a Pachislo until she saw my girlfriends and mine! Pachinko of course she has seen but no Pachislo. Makes one wonder if Pachislo is primarily in the heaviest populated areas ?

In any case WELCOME ARussell!! Your insight here will be appreciated !!
