Talking 2012 Olympics YAY!! (aka Stuey Goes to London!!)

Well I love the Olympics so here is this years Olympic thread!!

I usually post the medal counts every day and stuff, but this year it might be hard to because I'm going to the Olympics!!

Feel free to post any interesting London 2012 stuff here if you want (try not to just post too many random videos that have nothing to do with this Olympics though ) And talk about the Olympics here, but always be mindful of discussing events that might be tape delayed in some countries..You know..Don't want to spoil any big events!!

    Ok, get posting!!

Got to see the Olympic torch yesterday (Monday) as it was passing through the Brighton area. Wasn't planning on seeing it, but had decided to take the cab out and see if the extra crowds who were out to watch it would boost the meagre earnings of a humble taxi driver.

Got a fare into the city centre, where the only practical route would be across the path of the torch parade, but according to the timetable it would have passed a few minutes earlier, so I warned the lady that there might still be some traffic congestion as the roads will have been closed, but they should be re-opening any time now, and we set off on our way.

When we reached the parade route the road was still closed, with a few cars and a double decker bus waiting patiently in front of us, but we could still see people standing on the edge of the road that crosses in front of us. About a minute later, a couple of police motorcyclists passed in front of the crowds and then a couple of official vehicles, and then finally the runner with the torch held high enough that we could just about see it above the heads of the people lining the route.

Due to the bus waiting in front of us, most of our view was blocked, and we only got to see the torch for a couple of seconds, but it was still cool as neither of us were expecting to see it at all!

A couple of minutes later the crowds had dispersed, the road was re-opened, and we completed our journey. After which I took up a place on the taxi rank at the city centre railway station, and had a chat with a couple of the other drivers who were waiting recalling my brief viewing experience along with the important details of which roads were now open and which areas should still be avoided.

I thought that was going to be it, but when it came to my turn to take a fare, the gentleman wanted to go back across town to the same side of the city I had just been. Having just come from there, I knew which roads to take and where the traffic congestion was, and the best route would take us past the end of the road where the torch parade would finish and enter the local county cricket ground (stadium). Traffic was slow as we neared the road that passes the cricket ground, and there were quite a few people by the side of the road looking towards the entrance, and yes just as I drove past you could see the runner with the torch waiting outside to take it in to the evening celebration event that was taking place inside.

Probably not the most exciting way to see the Olympic torch, but still was an unexpected double bonus for a busy evening driving a cab around Brighton.

My wife, son and I watched the torch come through Denver in 2002 on it's way to the Salt Lake City winter games. We were within three feet of it as it passed by. It was both an exciting and memorable moment for us all.
