Thread: What does this mean ?

I saw this in an auction on E-Bay recently an I'm wondering what it means? Why would any dealer agree to charge their customers $30 for picking up an item? What agreement with a local dealer would result in charging customers a fee for picking up their items in person?
We welcome anyone in the area to pickup your eBay purchase and avoid the full shipping fee. A $30.00 fee is charged for each item picked up. This is due to an agreement with our local dealers.

It means they make some money on the shipping charge, but since they are not going to be shipping, they want to make up for it on the pickup.

It is also to keep local dealers (that they supply on a wholesale basis) from getting too upset about their eBay and direct Internet sales. The local dealers can do OK competing against eBay and direct Internet sales because there's always an extra $60 to $80 tacked on to the price for shipping. But for local customers that isn't the case. So adding that $30 pick up fee just levels the playing field a little.

And. back to Zcore13's point, it makes for a good excuse to recover some of that profit that they would have normally made on the inflated shipping.

Is there not also a cost involved in the packaging of the item. The materials used and labor placed into the process do have a cost.

No, it's all free. Box stores started giving away their products a while ago. The electric companies heard about it as well as the phone companies so they are donating their services to the box companies. If you visit your box store around lunch time you'll probably get a Big Mac since McDonalds heard about it and is providing free grub for the box stores too.

It doesn't say its a packaging fee, if it is then why not just say so? If you go to Sears and buy a lawnmower, do they charge you extra for the box? The "cute" comments about everything being free were uncalled for as well. I never questioned the need for packaging and handling charges I questioned the agreement with other vendors.
To those of you who offered valid explanations, thanks!

    Jazzy-Jay,

No one here is trying to offend you. This is a close nit group of people that enjoy each others company. The comments above where just humor, and not meant to be taken at your expense.

The difference between a lawn mower and a slot machine is a lot. The lawn mower comes pre-packaged, these machine do not. As with most things on ebay it is assumed that there is a packaging fee included in the shipping and handling.

Once again, we are very happy to have you here.

Lighten up there bud. It's called humor. It was a facetious comment, written to give a smile to the reader.

Okay, my apologies for getting a little "testy" with the group. I'll try to keep my sense of humor intact when dealing with you guys.
I should be getting my first Pachislo ever from BigBear tomorrow. I'll post my experiences when I get it unpacked.
... And one of ya'll had your hands a little low on the anatomy during the group hug too, but since I'm still a newbie, I can't say for sure who it was !
    Thanks everyone !

    jazzy jay,

i used to have a problem with being charged the 30 dollar pickup fee since i work 2 minutes away from that dealers warehouse, but after buying 3 straight machine from this company it no longer bothers me because theyre what i believe to be the best company for these machines and if you ever have a problem you can take it back right to their warehouse. I'd also rather pay their 30 dollar pickup fee than have a machine arrived and be broke and then going thru the hassle of having it shipped back etc. so all in all i just figure that 30 fee into my bids and ive gotten all of my machine for what im willing to pay and everything work out great.
