I'm almost embarrassed to say that all those parts were just lying around the shop.

That isn't too bad. I have made way worse chrome look nice. Take fine grain wet sandpaper (start at about 400 grit) and work your way up to about 1500-2000 grit and then you buff it with a buffing wheel. (If you have one that is) It turn out nice. Much better than steel wool.

    100 machines and counting...

Well, yes it's not so bad that it couldn't be made nice. I even know a plater that does small batches. I just question my sanity. It's not like I need another project.

I wouldn't replate. I got a whole frame done. (Yes outer, inner, and ball panel.) Cost me around $250

Had a little time today so I made part of the motor mount! The pulleys and belt were left over from an old job and I think they will do just fine.

So here it is weeks later. The ball lift is mostly disassembled awaiting modifications. Wife and friends are requesting the cider press I've been threatening to build for about three years; there is a bumper crop of apples starting to come in. So I guess I'll get that going and work on the ball lift when I can steal some time.

I'm back! At least for a little while. Finished the cider press and have been able to spend some time on the ball lift. Nothing photogenic for now; mostly housekeeping type stuff and finishing the fiddly bits. For example; the table that everything is on was not level, so I spent some time correcting that. Now I wonder if the balls will stay on the screw without a fourth side? More as it happens!

So I spent some time looking at Rockston's ball pump and got inspired! I'm still in the "fiddly bits" stage; mounting everything securely, getting the adapters made so I can use the pulleys I found, and so on. A little setback yesterday when I misread my own notes and changed 1.20 inches into 1.120 inches. One of the risks of working on stuff late. I'm starting to dream up the feed tray, but then get frustrated because I'm not to that step yet. I'll take the camera back to the shop so I can take some more pictures.

I know that it still looks the same, but there is real progress!
    bottom mount.jpgball lift 10 Oct 2012.JPGmotor mount2.jpgrail mount.jpg

The next step is make an adapter for the pulley to fit the screw and mount up the plastic sheet that will keep the balls on the rail. Then the fun begins! Hook up the motor and start feeding balls!

    Good news, bad news.
The good news is that I'm ready to build some kind of ramp or tray to feed balls into the screw. The screw works really well but needs a 12V wall-wart instead of the 9V that I hooked up. No video.
The bad news is that I'm going to be out of commission for awhile so I can recover from my upcoming valve job. I won't be driving for six weeks and I'm sure m'lady won't take me to the shop unless I promise not to do anything.
    I'll keep in touch.

...and I'm back! Valve job successful! Driving restriction is only until I'm off the serious pain meds; so not more than a week or so more. The ball exit chute was the last thing that I was working on and is one of those things that just sorta fell together. I'll get some pics up soon. As soon as the thing runs continuously hands off I will be shooting some video.
