Default Well wishing to Jeff Jackson (JACKSJE4) after his vacation gone bad!

    Hello Everyone,

I havent posted in awhile but I think its time on a personal level to give Jeff Jackson some well wishing after a serious accident he experienced while he was on vacation in Mexico. A vacation I know he was looking forward too.

He received some serious burns in an accident with some equipment from his Mexico vacation home and I'd like to let you all he is doing well in a Yuma, AZ Hospital. Given his modest personality it seems he hasnt shared it to the Pachitalk family. His outlook for recovery is positive and my thoughts are with him as I hope yours are.

Help me in supporting one of our most important and inspirational members!

    Gordon

Like Dawn, I have been following Jeff's Facebook posts and worrying whilst waiting for updates, after that first status post

It has been a serious accident, but true to form, Jeff seems in good spirits and has even posted pics

I really hope Jeff is ok..I know he said he couldn't wait to just lay around, but I'm pretty sure this isn't what he had in mind!!

I would like to thank everyone for thinking of me during the past few days and keeping me in your thoughts prayers. I was VERY touched when I logged in today and first saw this thread. Words can't describe how I felt inside.

As Microbus mentioned above, my plans for a week on the beach in Mexico didn't quite turn out as expected. My family has owned a house down in San Felipe on the Baja peninsula for the past 20+ years, and we share it's use. This was to be our summer week at the house. There are no utilities where it is located, so it runs on solar and propane gas. Soon after we arrived I set to work getting everything powered on, including a propane gas refrigerator just like the kind you would find in a trailer or motor home. I lit the fridge and went on to do other chores as my family unpacked and got settled. About an hour passed and I checked on the fridge - the propane burner had gone out, which is a common occurrence when you first light it. Anyhow, I switched it off and back on to restart it as I have done in the past, only this time it literally exploded with a ball of flames! The gas safety valve must have gotten stuck and did not shut off the gas when the flame went out, so the propane gas collected behind the fridge.

The blast was pretty strong - it tossed me about 10 ft and emptied all of the cupboards on the wall. A neighbor two doors down felt the ground shake and heard their windows and dishes rattle. They thought it was another earth tremour from a recent earthquake. I immediately picked myself up and ran outside to shut off the gas to the house. At that point, my legs started to sting a bit and I knew I had been scorched. I had my son run to ask the neighbor, a retired fireman, for help, then I had my wife start applying cold water-soaked towels and ice to my burns. I proceeded to pass out and soon went into shock.

Our home is in a very remote area that is a 30 minute drive from the nearest town, and the cell phone service comes and goes (mostly goes). The neighbor has a CB radio in his home so he used it to contact a local doctor who runs a MASH style clinic down the road. He arrived within 15 minutes, made his assessment, then I was rushed to his clinic via dune buggy where they cleaned and dressed my wounds. They also radioed the local Red Cross to send an ambulance from town. I was transported to the hospital in town where I spent the night hooked to an IV and monitored closely. They assessed my burns as primarily first degree (similar to a really bad sunburn), with several areas that were rated as second or third degree. The doctor told me that 36% of my skin had burns.

I was discharged early the next morning with instructions to have my wounds cleaned and bandages changed twice daily by a doctor, and to stay indoors out of the sun (not an easy thing to do while on a beautiful beach!). So we decided it would be best to pack everything up and head back to into the U.S. to seek further medical care from a hospital with expertise in burns. We were soon on the road headed for the border, stopping at the closest hospital in Yuma, Arizona. My prognosis is very good and I am told I will make a full recovery, although I will probably have a bit of scarring to remind me of my adventure.

The night I spent in the hospital in San Felipe gave me time to reflect on everything that had occurred leading up to my hospital stay, and I am still stunned that my injuries were not much more severe, or even deadly. Any explosion that rocks another house two doors away is a very powerful explosion, and to be standing at the epicenter wearing nothing but swim trunks and only receiving "light" burns on my legs, well... All I can say is that I now believe in angels and miracles!!

I have told all of the people I have talked to since the event that I feel VERY fortunate and blessed to be here to tell you my story.

Again, thank you for all of your well wishes, words of encouragement and prayers. You are all like family to me.

    God Bless.
    Jeff Jackson, Denver CO

That sounds like the "funnest" part of your entire story. A dune buggy ride!! Cool!!!

Oh, wait... I tracked off there. :-)

Glad to hear all will be well! Heal quick!
