One of the best books I have ever read is Skunkworks, which details the development of this plane and a few others. And to think most of titanium needed to build most of the airframe came from Russia courtesy of a CIA front company. The very country the plane was doing much of its spying on.

A friend of my Dad's use to be an engineer at Skunkworks. He had some fascinating stories to tell about projects he worked on. He did say there were a lot of projects that are still classified and he couldn't talk about.

Sad to see it retired and all the tooling and tools destroyed as well. I think the handwriting was on the wall though with technology(satellites and more of them) with powerful cameras getting better photos than what the plane could. Probably a matter of time as well before the Russians developed missiles and techniques to bring one down and no one wanted another Gary Powers incident. Supposedly shooting one down was paramount to them and they devoted considerable resources to do this.
I saw one in person up here at the evergreen aviation museum. Stood there in amazement for a good 15 minutes before approaching it for a closer look.

We have one on display here at the United States Air Force Museum at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton Ohio. Always one of my favorite planes to visit when I go there!
