    Default Jackpot !

I scored big today! Been eyeballing an old Mills slot machine for a few years now. Seller, whom is a slot machine retailer, specializing in modern Las Vegas style machines, has always had this one,DSCF7122.jpg and a Mills Black Cherry. Both have always been about $1000, This one a little less, Black Cherry a little more. I decided to make a lowball offer with my tax refund, (I know...I should have used it to turn my GAS back on!) Owner was not in when I arrived. Employee informed me that owner wanted $500 for it! This was good news...as I wanted to offer $450 because of the economy...I figured slot machine sales would be slow, and maybe my offer would sound good! When owner's truck arrived...the son came out. He called owner and LONG STORY SHORT... $350 for a very vintage Mills slot machine. It is said to have come out of an AIR FORCE Officers Club.DSCF7129.jpg Machine # SAM 1. Part of the deal was NO KEYS! But I get to keep whatever money is inside. I had to pick the lock, using a pocket screwdriver, and a paper clip.DSCF7118.jpg Front door opened...2 lock cylinders on cash box to go. A mechanical machine it is!!!DSCF7115.jpgUnfortunately It only had about $15 in quarters in it, NONE SILVER! There was a minor payout issue, it didn't always pay what the payout chart stated.DSCF7127.jpg This was easily seen why once I picked the lock...a payouy slide was out of place.DSCF7116.jpg It is the crooked white piece between the flex pipe, and the brass tube. I still have some operating issues with it, and need it make keys/ pick locks, but I am very happy with the buy! Don't know exactly how old it is,(likely newer than 1950 because of electric plug. this is only used to power the electrical coin acceptor and keep track of coins! DSCF7131.jpg In order to fix it, I had to remove the payout slides. They are plastic, unusual for a Mills machine. I cleaned the oil off, because You Should Never oil the payout plaques. It will cause problems

Any mills I have seen or had always had metal slides. First time I have heard of plastic. It is a few years newer than any I have had, it will be interesting to hear from other members. Nice buy.

I have never EVER seen plastic payout slides before this one! I knew it wasn't "antique", simply because of the cord, but I knew it was mechanical, which was very important to me. It has coin counters.DSCF7121.jpg The one that counts the coins going in, is at 33,003. If not rolled over or tampered with...that would be about $8250 going in. Sounds low to me...probably can't be trusted. Coin acceptor needs power to work. Some minor wiring and solenoids on mechanism, seems to be for coin counters only. Very unusual mount...slides out like a drawer, and rotates on a lazy Susan! (don't know how that poor girl got such a bad rap!) I'll post pics later, am having computer issues, and was very tired last night...stayed up WAY TOO LATE! DSCF7127.jpg Here is the payout card that I forgot to post last night. Haven't tested jackpots since tinkering with it last night, but do have a coin jam issue at the coin funnel at the top of the payout tube. Should be simple fix. Just thought of something...this is the only Mills machine I have seen without a coin escalator. This is a window at the top where the last 5 or so coins can be seen to deter the use of slugs. I haven't heard from Young Jedi lately...Would like to get his input since he has seen many Mills machines.Interesting machine, I'll post more pics later.

Had a pair of keys made today.DSCF7138.jpgThe lock was only held in with 1 screw, so I'll have to pick some up at work. As mentioned earlier...the mechanism slides out on rails like a drawer.DSCF7132.jpg This is fully extended, and it is as stable as can be! You have to push down firmly to make it start to tip, then when you let go it settles back upright. Plus it is on a LazySusan so it can be rotated. DSCF7133.jpg Here is the electrical connector that plugs into the socket on the back.DSCF7134.jpg It has a good amount of wires with at least 1 relay in the back.DSCF7136.jpg Has an electric bell that hasn't rang yet.DSCF7137.jpg It probably only rings on the BIG $24 or $30 jackpot!DSCF7125.jpgDSCF7126.jpg Bell is probably rang by this switch on the side with the payout levers.DSCF7135.jpg The bracket that the switch is on was loose, and almost every screw slot is boogered. It has been tinkered with quite a bit. It is not paying out like it should, ever since I tried to fix the slides. I'm going to have to look into that. Lots of stuff loose, looking it over and tightening it up. Good thing it wasn't a premium price...still quite happy with what I paid!

Was able to pick 1 cashbox lock but not the other, so I simply removed the 3 screws (1 is missing) that hold the top to the cashbox. Then I was able to take the other lock apart.DSCF7144.jpg Chrome box has some rust and needs a good cleaning.I discovered this quarter before it could do any harm!DSCF7142.jpg Looks like the coin slot is not the was it used to beDSCF7145.jpghandle was loose, so I removed it for cleaning and tightening/DSCF7146.jpg When reinstalling...I put a good ammount of grese because this would be a high wear area. Too tired to type...I'll finish tomorrow.

I was really wondering about the plastic coin unit that you found. Does it work and payout right or do you think it is a modification to the original Machine??? Like you stated above this must of been the changeover for mills without the coin ratcher on the top so you could see the coins. Always enjoy the older machines like this. Have had both the modern and the older machines. The moderns are a dime a dozen down here in Arizona. On any given day their are always three or four on Craigs list and alot of stores trying to sell alot of them. I had no idea their were that many in Arizona.

Back when I bought Brains Beer
Brains Beer! (Slot/Fruit Machine) , I bought this book DSCF7153.jpg I hated spending $50 on a paperback book, but it has been invaluable! It has about 600 black & white photos and great explanations of how the machine works. It is like a Chilton's manual for Mills slot machines! Here is what it has to say about Sega machines.DSCF7150.jpg Not much info, just 1 sentance. In case it don't show well:"The Sega, which was manufactured in Japan and was built from actual machine drawings of the Mills bell slot machine, is completely compatible with all Mills bell machines" Sounds like if one of your parts is missing, or broken, you can get a Mills part to replace it. The mechanism is the same, so this book would be a great tool to have if you decide to do any maintanence or repair yourself!

I believe it is original, and correct for the era of this particular machine. At 1st, most of the payouts were correct but some payouts didn't pay at all, or shorted you 1 or 2 coins. That made sense when I opened it up and seen the slide out of place. Since gravity kept pulling coins into the holes of the slides, I couldn't get it back into place until all coins were cleared. Knowing that they go in a VERY SPECIFIC order and direction...I carefully unhooked the top spring, found out which slide was loose, and removed it. Repeat with the next spring down, and placed them in order from left to right. I just sprayed each one with Simple Green and wiped them off to remove the oil on them, I was afraid to use carb cleaner...would hate for them to crumble someday! Looking at the wear pattern (just scratches actually...not really wear), it was easy to determine top from bottom, I started from bottom and stacked them up and in their respective places. At 1st it wasn't paying out at all, 1 cherry, any 2 others should pay 2 coins...2 cherries, any other should pay 5 coins...NOTHING. I thought I did something wrong, but decided to troubleshoot later. Eventually I hit 2 plums and a 7, paid 14 coins...apparently one of the mystery jackpots to watch for!DSCF7128.jpg Ever since, it has been paying out correctly, probably just had to cycle enough slides at once to line something up right. I don't know how it can payout the big $24, or $30 jackpots. Since payouts are slid off the bottom The thickness and number of slides determines the amount of payout. $30 is 3 rolls of quarters...that is one tall stack of coins! The slides are nowhere near that tall,DSCF7139.jpg therefore it would take many cycles all slides to accomplish that! All slides combined hold 20 quarters...that is 5 or 6 cycles of all slides for the 2 big jackpots! On the machine on the cover of my last post, there is a window on the front that slowly fills up with coins, the big 777 hit dumps that window. There are additional parts of the mechanism that activate and refill this feature. (I WANT ONE! ) Not part of this machine, don't appear to have ever been here. There are some mystery,s though: DSCF7155.jpg Stuff missing from the top of the inside door, and a window to the left that was covered with electrical tape. This opening is directly behind the Mills glass, so I believe that there was once a light behind it. Can't tell what is missing here,DSCF7156.jpg but the bottom of the door just don't look right! There are also screw holes in many places without anything attached to them.DSCF7157.jpg And the slots of almost every screw are boogered! Hard telling what it's original configuration was, but coin slides look original.DSCF7165.jpg After I did this, they wouldn't go back in until I hit a 5 coin jackpot. As far as the escalator ( correct name for coin mechanism behind the top window) here is what the book has to say:DSCF7151.jpg and: DSCF7152.jpg Of course mine don't have the hopper. Maybe late '50s or early '60s

Well I know on the older machines the top payout was always 18. Then their was the jackpot dump for the big payout. I think the others would have had to have been paid by the casino. In my opinion. I am sure their are some old slot machine people on here that have not seen the posts yet and will probably chime in. The plastic units look just like the metal units from the older ones. Thank You Don

Back to what I was trying to post last night...I was literally falling asleep, would look at the screen, try to remember what I was typing, and find the correct pic. I couldn't do it. Here is the pic oh the greased handle ready to install.DSCF7147.jpg I used a high temp, extreme pressure grease on this part...after wiping off the old grease, and using carb cleaner to get off the stuff that wouldn't wipe or scrape off. Well. it would scrape off, but I didn't want to scratch it up. The part this slides into has a grease fitting on it to lube it with a grease gun later. I used the 1 flathead screw that held the lock on. scrounged a bent screw that had a nut on it hanging on a bracket on the door that I have no idea what it once did. Hammered the bent screw almost straight, found a screw in my toolbox with the same thread pitch, but too long. Used a cutoff wheel on a Dremel to cut long screw to size, shortened the bent screw because it binded against the case, and used the leftover part of the long screw along with the nut from the bent screw to attach the lock.DSCF7166.jpg There is a brass spacer tube you can see on the top screw. This is necessary to hold the lock plate level, not needed on the back due to the shape of the plate.DSCF7138.jpg With only 1 screw holding the lock in place I thought I would need to buy another or use a small nut as a spacer because 2 are required. I got lucky and found the other spacer rolling around in the bottom! The lock works perfectly.DSCF7167.jpg When unlocked slide the whole lock cylinder up in the slot.DSCF7168.jpg The lock cylinder is attached to a plate that is screwed to the vertical bar with the hooks on it...latching to the front door. When locked the tang extends into the bracket behind it held down with mismatched nuts. I guess my use of whatever I could find to hold the lock on is on par with all the other mismatched stuff on this machine. As stated earlier, the coin mechanism has been altered.DSCF7154.jpg Looks like the original part was removed and something else was screwed on, drilling new holes and leaving empty holes behind. Just like the empty holes above the coin tray, which I removed, scrubbed with an SOS pad, then polished with Mothers.DSCF7158.jpg Didn't really go to town on it, just wanted to get the crud and oxidation off of it. It has a number of scrapes and gouges on it,(I filed smooth a particularly bad spot sanded with fine, followed by very fine sandpaper, and polished) so a mirror like finish would look stupid; especially with all the chips in the blue paint and other wear and age marks!

I just ran a few more quarters through it and a single cherry 2 anythings, should have paid 2...didn't! Then a few pulls later, 3 oranges, should have paid 14...also didn't! Gonna have to look into that when I disssemble and clean and lube the whole mechanism. Not anytime soon...too many other jobs to do! Of course I can't get a new toy and not tinker with it just a little! Especially the stuff that just bugs me!

3 oranges, should have paid 10...Still didn't! DSCF7128.jpg The bellyglass Was scraped some time ago.DSCF7126.jpg It is painted on the inside...and scratched on the inside!DSCF7169.jpg So i took some yellow model paint, and touched up these spots.DSCF7175.jpg Now it looks like this! DSCF7174.jpg I don't have any black yet. I'm thinking of putting some LED lighting back here someday. I'm afraid the touch up spots will be darker because the paint is thicker. While paint was still on my brush I decided to paint the bulb inside the candle yellow. DSCF7173.jpg When no quarter in candle is off and handle won't pull. When a quarter is put in the candle turns on. It was painted green, but some of the paint was scraped off, and cast green and white patterns on the globe. So, I scraped it off, cleaned it off with carb cleaner, painted it yellow, and put a quarter in to bake it on. I don't look very yellow in pics...dark or light.DSCF7170.jpg The coin holder on top is what Reece's Las Vegas Reece's Las Vegas Supplies used to count 100 pachislo tokens when I buy them locally. I talked them out of one awhile back. I like to put my playimg quarters in the holder on top and keep track of my winnings in the payout tray. Gonna glue some strong magnets to the bottom so I can stick it to the top without glue or tape to damage the paint! DSCF7168.jpgDSCF7136.jpg There is so many chips in the paint, inside and out, like it would really matter! No, really, I don't know if I like it in front, to the left of the candle...or behind the coin ramp. Magnets allow me to put it wherever! Apparently, the case for this model was orange. But if you look at any of the pics of the inside...it was painted blue before any wires, bell, or electrical junction box was installed. I was told it came from an Air Force officers club...could it have been custom ordered in blue for the military?

Finally took some time last night to work on the payout slides last night. As I expected, They were not in the correct order. I looked through my book, to no avail, the book said to wire them together to keep them tn order...nothing about what is the correct order if not already there. So I sifted the internet, to no avail... but bookmarked a few sites of other things to look at later. Finally decided to just try trial and error. Once I got 1cherry =2, & 2 cherries =5... it was pretty easy to figure out.DSCF7128.jpg Since the next level was 10, that was 5 more coins. Then 14, followed by 18, each 4 coin steps. The leftover slides was 1 thick one, & 2 slightly thinner ones...each the same thickness, I installed them in that order. Jackpot! I can't upload pics! I changed settings on my camera, and the files are too large! I'll have to take more later. It pays out perfectly now! I played for awhile for test purposes (and fun), to see how tight it is. There are enough 2 & 5 coin hits, mixed with the bigger wins that it will keep you playing...while SLOWLY taking your money! Just like a good slot machine should! If it simply took without winning, nobody would want to play. If it paid too much, the HOUSE wouldn't want it in service. The odds on this machine are just about right! There is a substantial amount of wear on the reel plates where the kicker spins the reels, so this machine has seen LOTS of use. Also, every screw has been boogered on the head slot...so it has been tinkered with a lot! So, I truly think the price I paid was more like what the machine was really worth...rather than a great deal. I replaced some screws, which stand out as new screws, but can be tightened. Don't think this will affect value, as it has lots of wear and seems missing some parts, etc. Not that it really matters, I have no intention of selling! I next started troubleshooting the coin acceptor... but since my pics wont post, I'll tell you about my new troubles later!
