Question Just won this machine - shipping from Florida to Illinois

    Hey all,

    Just won this : http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...X:R TQ:US:1123

The seller is quoting $80-$90 to ship from Florida to Illinois by UPS, plus $25 to pack it up as I directed him (small box, foam sides, peantus, double wrapped, tape over all corners etc etc).

What do you think on those prices? Is UPS the best choice, and should I just let them do the packing and save the Seller the (obvious) hassle?

The shipping rate looks about right but charging you $25 for packing it seems a little high. I've never used UPS, FedEx, or US Mail to pack machine. I would suspect it would be even higher than your sellers asking price and it may not be very well protected. You might be safer with the sellers packing offer provided they've packed it like you requested.

I had a vintage shipped from Oregon to Ohio (over 2000 miles) through USPS for $40. It is much lighter than an early modern though. I have had very good luck with safe shipping through USPS. Packing materials to ship a pachislo got pricy once...so I guess it is not that unreasonable, at least it will arrive safely! Please post a thread of all you will be shipping back before you go.

Congrats on your machine. To me , that packing price seems fairly cheap. I frequently have ups do the packing and I actually prefer it to a seller who very likely wont do it right. It seems packing is usually around 50 or so but I've definitely paid more before.
As far as shippers, everyones had good and bad experiences with them all and debate over which one is best. It's like ford vs. Chevy and all the other nonsensical debates people go on about. If one were much better or worse than the other then it would be common knowledge and the worse one would be out of business. Ive shipped plenty of heavy arrangeballs with only a couple of minor issues. If I was averse to shipping due to bad experiences then I wouldn't have the caliber of arrangeball collection that I do. I realize you have to ship and have no choice but I think you'll be fine as long as you give good packing instruction to the seller.

Thanks all - agree that I should pay the Seller what he wants to do it right. I have used the 'packing a pachinko' thread instructions, in the Cabinet section, to make sure he gets it right. He believes it's 'overkill', but I've said I won't be a happy boy if it arrives damaged, so I think he'll help out.

Will let you know how it arrives.

Shipping costs to/from the midwest tend to be be high. The first time I was quoted costs from Illinois to Arizona I thought they were full of it, but it's true.

Make sure the machine travels from point to point in it's normal upright position (box marked boldly with directional arrows and "DO NOT LAY FLAT"). I have had very good results when machines are shipped that way. They tend to be handled more gently due to the awkward way they need to be carried, and they are less likely to have other packages land on top of them with a "thud" compared to when they are laid flat.

    Keep us posted.

Post Re: Just won this machine - shipping from Florida to Illinois

Shipping was $94 for FedEx, $25 for the Seller to buy the packaging and all his hard work. So $119 all up, plus eBay purchase price.

I wasn't game to ask him for photos of the package before he sent it on - he was tired and fed up with having to pack to my specifications and noted that for what he went through (for $25), I better leave damn good Feedback! I will attempt to get photos of the package on it's arrival in Illinois before it is unpacked, and a report from my Agent on the condition when it arrived.

Can't wait to have this one in my collection back in Oz in a few months time... it will get lots and lots of use and LOVE.
