    Default Mame Kit?

I was thinking of getting a big arcade machine that plays all the clasics. Upon doing a little research I came across MAME. I don't really understand the details but if I could buy a kit that comes with all the software and hardware (with all the bells/whistles etc) that i could assemble and save myself the hassle of trying to move a big bulky machine and have fun building it , that sounds like a good idea.

Does anyone know of such a kit - or have some ideas on how to proceed?

    Thanks,

    Bob

I have seen several variations of mame systems. Some are home built and others you can purchase complete. One example would be http://www.xgaming.com/store/arcade-...chine-cabinet/.

It really depends on how much you are planning to spend. I have owned several classic arcade machines. While fun they definitely take up space and are not a lot of fun to move around. I have since sold them off and have been thinking of doing a mame machine myself.

I believe there is at least one member here who has a mame machine they designed. I will do some checking to see if I can find the link to the thread.

I need to be educated. All the website that I have looked at talk about building (or buying) the cabinet and joystick and monitor etc. Where does one get the software? "Mame" talks about you needing original ROM disks (i think thats what they called them). If so, where/how does one get those? What does the "Mame" software do?

MAME software is easily obtainable for free. I have only run it on a pc although I hear it is available for the Mac as well. MAME Roms are also easily obtainable. You do not need disks just the files.

Last year for a summer project my son and I built a mame cabinet. We built a Bartop mame cab. It was pretty cheap to make I use Maximus arcade for the frontend and we love it. I'll post some pics of it if you want.

MAME is something that you have to ease into and educate yourself in as you go. I agree with luckdog in that you should start with MAME32 (if you have a Windows based pc that is). It has a simple GUI interface and all you have to do is put some rom files (Google is your friend) in a folder and complete a few audit tasks and you should be good to go. most rom files can be run using your keyboard but, as you become more familiar, you may want to use a gamepad. Once you start with MAME32 you may decide to stick with it or it might prompt you to try customizing the interface(frontend) using other software. From there thesky is the limit. Like many others here, I too have had the satisfaction of building my own cab. The first step is to get familiar with the software and locating and loading roms.

Have fun..thats the most important thing.

    Cheers

I build my first MAME cabinet back in 2000, and I sold it in 2005 to build my current one. If you don't have basic hardware skills (circular saw skills mainly) or have never used a router, now might be the time to learn. :-)

I build the machine pictured below in a weekend including the lamination of the wood (lamination = counter top material = awesomely hard and durable).

Here is a picture, and an (outdated) link to other pictures. The machine has been finished, I just never got back to updating the web page.
