    Default Painting Pachislo Cabinet

I painted my Kung Fu Lady II today. It came out OK. I used spray paint, black high gloss. I wondered what others used? I was half tempted to use a roller! That would have ben easier to say the least. I filled the holes and scratches, sanded it down, and then taped, taped, taped, and sprayed. I can see where I should have saned a little better, but it is so much better than how I received the macine.

Anyway, how do you guys paint yours?

The First Couple We Used A Heavy Fill Primer After The Bodywork With Filler Then Sanded With 150 Grit. Came Out Nice! Now I Just Laminate Them Like Pachinko Palace, Except With Good Laminate And I Leave All Openings Intact For Cooling And Lifting.

I like the laminate idea. That way you can have it match your decor.

When you use laminate do you need a router? And what kind of glue? I've never worked with "true" laminate from say Home Depot.

David R. you are suppose to use a router, using contact cement to hold the laminate on will do fine, brush on dont use the spray on from the spray can. Make sure to brush it on the machine and the laminate piece and it wont be going anywheres. You leave the edge a little big and just use the router and the special router bit to trim the edges.

I workrd as a carpenter for many years - a good router is not a cheap tool and a cheap router is really just a piece of junk so....
IF you don't have a router... There are router bits made for edge routing laminate. The ones with a ball bearing roller at bottom are best. You can do this with a drill, put bit in and very carefully route the edges. Use highest speed your electric drill will turn. A battery drill would work but they turn rather slow and it would be easier to "mess up" with the slow speed and high torque the battery drills have. I know this will work as I did this before in certain jobs where a router was too large to fit in the spot I needed to route.
A second choice would be to use a belt sander to grind off the edges. Since the edges are straight this is easy to do without much trouble.

    I use a roller and semi-gloss black.

I'm basically lazy, so I looked for the easiest way out. When you're going to paint something as small as a pachislos (as opposed to a whole room), cleaning up when you're done takes longer than the painting. So I use one of those little trim rollers. They're cheap and the plastic packing they come in is a miniature paint tray. I do several machines at one time, then just toss the roller in the trash.

I use the semi-gloss instead of gloss because gloss makes it too easy to see all the imperfections.

And, if the machine is going to be in the middle of a row of pachislos, I don't even bother painting. In a typical row of 4 I'm using half of a 36" bi-fold door (18") as a shelf. Then I use half of a 24" bi-fold as a 12" top shelf. The machines look almost built-in and you can't see enough of the cabinet to worry about painting.

If you put them so close side by side, how do you open them. Do you open the very 1st left one and go down the line until you get to the one you want?

On a normal length (height?) bi-fold door, there is enough room to leave a small space between the 4 machines. This allows enough room to open the door to put in or take out tokens. However you cannot open it far enough to do major service work - like take out a hopper. If that's necessary I just slide a machine out a few inches.

I was thinking the same thing. I just used something just like it for a reptile stand. It sprays out rough and textured, almost like a course sandpaper texture. It did GREAT on the stand. I did not know it was called trunk paint though. I picked up two cans at a craft shop. I will look for it now in the auto parts section.

The only down side to it is that it was in spray paint format. The roller idea above is so much easier. Taping these things takes some time.

Just tape off the door and stuff some paper in the holes takes 15 min to tape the whole thing, dont worry about the inside edges of the door frame as its coverd by the door you can put masking tape in the screened holes and cut the outline with exacto knife and the open ones just mask over on the inside , its easy to mask the door frame if you wish put tape on newspaper , leave a good edge of tape and stick it around about 1/8 inch from the edge on the inside , cover the left over opening with a piece of paper and spray away , Opps forgot in this application ,take the door off thats pretty easy , unplug and lift off

Ahhh. I knew I should have taken the door off. I did not, and that is why taping took so long. I will do that next time.

I do not know a lot about laminating but I have done some mostly the edge or end cap on counter tops. some hold on Good others have come loose over time. I asked a professional what I did wrong. He told me if the wood you are cluing to is ether raw or porous the cement glue will soak in to much. So to fix this He said to put a first coat of cement on the wood and let it dry. Then put a second on the wood and a first on the laminate. He said this will work for laminating wood veiner on too but to do the second coat on the wood laminate. Has any one used the black laminate from Parts Express? Is it thiner then regular laminate? Is it self Adhesive?

On the ones I needed to re-do, I also used a cheap trim roller with latex paint. The stuff I used was "American Accents, Canyon black" from Menards. It's pretty cheap per quart and cleans up with a little water and a garbage can. If you aren't familiar with laminating, then I'd use the paint. Using a drill and laminate bit would be REAL tough to get a strait edge and it's not worth the expense of buying a router.

Yes, I like it, you need to make sure your surface is free of all dust & oil (hand, grease, smoke). I wipe down with Everclear 180 proof, let dry than apply carefully, once down it is down. will not move, Trim with a very sharp razor blade knife smooth with edge. Than edge with an black non-smearing Majic marker on the wood.

On the bottom side edges, fine sand paper in to center to have NO edge. No edges around means nothing to catch to come loose.

I body putty the holes and sand first with 220, I 220 the whole out side for a good grip of the Adhesive. The black matty finish looks best.

I have painted using the small roller that is for behind the water closet, 1" Dia. and water based enamal. First fill and sand all to a 220 smooth. Two or three coats. bepends on the machine, use the blue painters masking tape.

I have sanded and filled with wood filler, and used med. stain than a wax finish. looks really different, I like it, but a lot of work.

I have put on the wood laminate, I double glue both the box and the wood sheet. Trim with BIG sharp Razor Knife.

    I hope I helped
