    Cool when will I learn

Okay. I sell 2 machines on ebay and a week later I gain another 2

The first one is a Nishijin Model B World Ski. And the Second is a Sanyo Comet II with what I'll call a plinko theme. (nothing else to call it)

The Nishijin has a cool history because I bought it off the lady who owned since it was imported. So it is a 1 owner machine and was cared for a lot nicer than most. It does show some signs like it was left out side for a while but not as bad as most machines I have. Overall the machine looks to be fairly nice. The playfield shows definite signs of water staining but it isn't as bad as other machines I own. Thankfully the chrome is in good shape on it too. The only thing I noticed is that the ramp in the CF is broken off but it can be fixed with a little glue.

The Sanyo is a basic Comet II. It shows signs like it was left outside or in a damp place. But thankfully the cell isn't damaged. The chrome on everything is toast though. I don't know what I'm going to do with this machine yet. I may either turn it into parts or use it to make a fraken-pachi. Anyone want to express their thoughts on what I should do with it?

if it would cost to much to fix I would say frankenpachi. unless it has parts a better machine needs, then part it and frankenpachi the remains

Sorry I forgot to mention I don't own any other sanyo's. Therefore I'd most likely be selling the parts if I was to part it out.

Love the ski themed Nishijin! That one was a good find.

it looks like it is all there so you have all the fast moving high priced bits but you also have the complete machine... Maybe a mild frankenpachi job to hide the rust or a survivor restoration (like I do) where you clean it up the best you can, make it work perfect and learn to love the rust pitting

I agree with Mopar. I spent a good while today cleaning up a rusted and pitted door frame with #000 and #0000 steel wool. It looks as good as new, but it took some elbow grease and patience.

Give it a try. You really don't have anything to lose.

I still have the sticker that came off by the window. Can I reattach it, or do I have to reproduce it?

the issue isn't the frame that much it is more or less all the trim it is way worse than the frame. (Sorry it is hard to see I'll post more pics tomorrow) I don't know I'll share my thoughts when I post the pictures.

    Thanks for everyone's ideas

Okay here are those extra pictures. (attached)

You can see that there is some heavy rust and pitting on all the chrome parts. The only reason that I don't like the steel wool is that it leaves fine scratches in the frame. I go and buff all my frames. When the time comes I'll see what I can do with this machine.

If I can't save it in any way then I will most likely part it out but I'll keep the playfield and merge it with an Okumarayuki frame that I have laying around. (see last few pics) The frame is in decent shape plus I have all the mechanisms and everything for it. The only thing I am missing is a playfield which is where the sanyo comes in. Also if I do end up parting out the sanyo I will most likely sell the parts of because I don't own any other sanyos or machines that share the same parts.

If anyone wants to share their thoughts feel free to do so I'd love to hear all ideas.

    Max,

I have been using #000 and #0000 steel wool on chrome frames for several years, and I have yet to see it leave any fine scratches. It removes the rust really well with minimal effort, and with some patience and elbow grease it will also remove most if not all of the pitting. Have you tried using that fine of wool?

I also use #0000 wool very lightly on the plastic ball trays and other pieces to remove deep scratches, tough tobacco stains and smooth out gouges and burn marks. I then use some GelGloss polish afterwards to restore the shine. Works like a champ!

Gotta use 0000 steel wool. I've been using it for over 2 decades to remove rust and grime from shotguns (slogging thru brackish marshes to get to a blind leaves everything filthy and if it's metal, slight rust). Since getting into pachinkos and pinballs it's pretty much all I use. No harm/scratches to gun finishes or pach/pins.

Okay I'll keep that all in mind and give it a try when time comes.

But the big issue is the finger rest and the shooter handle. because those have almost no chrome left on them and I don't have replacements. Also there is so much that would need to be done to the chrome trim it is almost pointless trying to save it. Plus all the other plastic trim parts are heavily faded and discolored.

I either just double posted or don't remember how to reply, sorry.

What I tried to post was,... Maybe because the cost is too much, but why not just have really badly rusted parts re-chromed? I'd think because of the cost right?

That being said. Showing my ignorance. I'd just like to thank everyone for this site. ?Helped?-?caused? my new addiction..LOL

The process for re-chroming the frame and other parts is expensive and not cost-effective for the majority of machines we find and restore. There are do-it-yourself home plating kits that provide fairly good results, but they only work on the smaller parts. I find that steel wool, patience and a bit of effort produces fantastic results on the majority of rusted chrome pieces that I encounter, and it is very easy on my wallet.

Jeff is certainly right. It is way too expensive to replate a frame. I had one done and it cost me $250 . I now found another chrome guy that could do it for less but it will still cost close to $200. Which then starts to exceed the value of the machine. Therefore I have to try to make it look nice without replating it.
