Default A new thing to collect...

I just recently started collecting Morgan Silver Dollars. My "Nona" Italian grandmother from Canada decided to give me a handful of her old coins and I was instantly hooked. The fact that they are huge silver dollars was one of the many factors I liked about collecting them. I have little to no interest in any other type of coin or currency but for some reason that coin in general peaked my interest.

Silver and gold prices are rising and the coins are large/heavy enough that they can not be easily lost so I decided I would start a small collection and watch it grow. I have an app on my phone that updates me when new auctions on ebay are listed and I pretty much buy anything under $30 as silver prices are now around $40 an ounce I see it as not just a cool thing to do but in time could be worth something halfway decent.

Does anyone else collect something besides pachi's?
What got you into collecting that item?
How do you collect it? (Craigslist, Ebay, Garage Sales, Flea Markets, etc)
    Why do you collect it?
**Pictures are always nice.** - If I wasn't headed to the hospital I would post some but I will this weekend when I get home.

i've been collecting coins since 1964, unfortunatly i'e had to sell them all off.

i had almost a complete morgan dollar set with the higheest priced 9 or 10 coins missing, also rolls of morgans circulated and BU.

they always have been my favorite coins too.

be careful buying on ebay, there are conterfits coming out of china that look good, you can always tell the are real be the ring by gently letting them drop on the table

I have been collecting for about forty years now off and on. I used to collect silver dollars but because of the large mark up by coin dealers and their grading practices I quit on silver dollars. I have a nice collection of 1916-1947 walking liberty halfs minus four. If you really like silver I collect unusal .999 fine five ounce pieces. You can find them on ebay. With the high price of silver I have sold most of it off but will always collect. One ounce .999 bars are always good to collect. Keep in Mind with the dollars they are only three quarters of an ounce of silver and that silver is only .90 fine. Therefore when silver goes up dollars lag behind pure silver and most coin dealers will only give you about 60 percent of what you buy the dollars for when you take them back. .999 fine on the other hand sells and buys usually within a dollar or two of the spot of silver. Alot easier to buy and sell. Just my two cents. And always remember when you have gotton a little to get a safe deposit box. Too many people come calling when you are not home, if they know you collect coins.

I agree with you on collecting .999 Ounces. I do that as well but not as much. Which I probably should.
They do fluctuate with the market which I like but I feel like if I am going to get into that I might as well just get back into trading stocks... :/

Does anyone collect pennies made of copper? I heard that was a good idea because of the price of copper is so high. 1909-1982 Copper Pennies, worth 265% more than the penny they are which is kinda interesting. It is almost like doubling your money. But the legality behind melting them down might be a deterrent. Not sure how all that works. But why not hoard a few hundred dollars in copper pennies if I have the time/space/patience...

Well copper is like any other commidty. The problem with pennies is weight and finding a place to melt them. They melt silver coins all of the time. Copper will have to go alot .higher before someone decides to start melting.

I think it is just a matter of time. The years will go by, the price will go up and they will start to sell. Also a matter of when... Next 20 years or 50, 0r 100, etc.

the actual silver content of silver dollars is .720 oz
so a roll would be 14.4 oz
a roll of silver haves would be 7.20 oz of pure silver
there is a bigger buy-sell gap on silver dollars than silver rounds or bars
in florida collectable coins have no sales tax, rounds or bars do
