Default Sankyo Jazz Men - No Sound

Just picked up a Sankyo Jazz men as pictured here: Sankyo Jazz Men I

Works great except there is no sound at all. I've attached some pics and am wondering if anyone else has a similar Sankyo that I can compare to.

Here is the soldering to the speaker

This switch is on the other side of the last pic, seems to do nothing when I mess with it.

Here is the back where the sound wire travels too.

Any help would be appreciated, I'm thinking maybe a new speaker from the shack or something would fix this, I have solid solder skills so that concept doesn't bother me...

    Any ideas?

Is that a home made volume switch? You might find the resisters are faulty.
First thing I would do is check the switch with a meter, failing that by-pass the switch and try it then. But hold on to your ears just in case
If nothing then check the speaker on something you know works. Like a car radio or hifi. Just need to do it for a few seconds to make sure you get sound.

Good luck. Let us know how you get on

I'm fairly sure the switch is original it's got some Japanese labeling on the plastic. Does anyone have a similar Sankyo machine to compare? I'll test the switch by bypassing it tonight and write back.

Ok I used a meter to test the voltage and I have no power coming from the back of the machine. I'm a little bit inexperienced at using the meter but am fairly confident the problem lies somewhere on the pcb... which is what I feared the most. Any ideas? Also there is a set of jumpers at the top right where possible where goes in from the power supply. Anyone know what those do?

A couple of questions to help me work this out. Do machines normally make sound in attract mode? Also does anyone know what voltage I'd be looking for on the wires leading to the speaker?

I have never seen a machine make a sound during attract mode, But I heard that some models do shout out random things in japanese,
audio output is normally very small under 2 volts, I wouldn't use a voltmeter to measure audio output,
Best way is to see what happens when you drop a ball in the start pocket.

What would I use to make sure there is something being sent to the speaker? When I tries to bypass the switch I got nothing out of it either, but then again, I didn't try dropping any balls in a pocket. Which pocket do you mean when you say "start pocket."

I have only seen one machine that makes any sounds during attract mode, "Pretty band" 2004 by Heiwa. It shouts the name of the machine every 10 minutes when idle

Ok, I hooked up another speaker and tested the wires all the way back to the board, fairly confident now that it is not a matter of a bad switch, or a bad speaker. I imagine I'm SOL when it comes to problems on the PCB side of things, any other ideas? I hooked up a speaker directly to the posts on the PCB and got nothing.

Would anyone with this age of machine, knows when its mean to make a noise? It would be a big help...

I have a Sankyo Road Construction (a little earlier than yours, but similar). The machine is silent during attract mode - except for maybe a hum from a motor. Follow Drunkenclams' advice. Drop a ball into one of the bottom pockets labeled 1 2 1. This should start the wings moving for 1, 2, or 1 second. There should also be ear piercing sounds coming from the machine. Hopefully there is nothing wrong w/ the machine, you just haven't hit the pockets yet!

How do you know that the speaker itself is any good? I'd test with a speaker known to be working and jumpers to bypass the switch.

I've done this. No go, wired a working speaker directly to the sound pins on the board and got nothing. I also definitely tried the right pockets to produce sound.

I took a bunch of pics of the board.

    Frontside.jpg

Here it is across the first pic has the two sound pins dead center - this is where I wired a working speaker and got nothing

    The Back Backside.jpg

Some anomalies on the back - Some crud near one edge - Crud.jpg
and (I couldn't get my camera to take a good pic of this) some brownish junk near the four pins in the bottom right of this pic - Gunk.jpg

To be honest nothing jumps out at me as a problem on the PCB, I've tried everything I can think of on the speaker side...stumped so far, though I don't know much about speakers...I wired a speaker that I know works up, but I don't know anything about said speaker as far as it's OHM rating etc...

Another thing - I just spoke with the guy who sold it to me, who I believe is being honest. Said the Sound was working when he tested it before selling it to me. That makes me think it's not a problem with the board and I'm probably testing this thing wrong somehow.

As far as a good test speaker goes, what should I be using? and how should I make the connection? so far I've just been having a friend drop balls in while I hold the speaker wires on to the contact points.

somr pachis will develope minor problems when stored too long or handled during moving and setup.

check all your connections, maybe the problem is between the pockets and main board??

Thanks, I didn't think to check all the connections that didn't involve the sound equipment. Will check that out next.

Ok, opened her up and no luck with any loose connections on the pocket side. Can someone help me with the speaker info. If I use the wrong speaker for the job will I get nothing? I've been using a desktop pc speaker that I clipped the rca connector off of and stripped the wires.

any speaker should make sound if signal is getting to it, may not sound good but will work. if it is not for a long time frame you won't harm anything using a speaker with a different rating than the original (more chance in damage to the speaker, but not on one of these with the low power levels)

Ok I am confident that it is not a bum speaker holding me back then. The pcb looks good to the eye, but should I test the resistors? All the capacitors look fine.
