First important fix. I discovered the balls goes too deep inside inlet part. A small copper wire prevent it.
When ball goes too deep, it might block the lift.

    P1010302.jpgP1010303.jpg
Second fix. Sanded down the sharp ends. This prevent also blocking by balls and it can makes sometimes "slam" sounds if sharp end hits ball at bad time.
The balls roll now much smoother inside after fix.

Finally many problems are solved and the lift runs much better in latest tests.
The project is finished for main goal.

I show you now some youtube clips.

    Security part demonstration.

Two videos are still in upload, but you may react. This is last story post.

The noise test. I have removed last collisions inside lift shaft.
Now you hear the normal running sound.

    Next video comes tomorrow.

dude, I am working on one mrdummy... I have the central wire wound and soldered and am now soldering on the arms . did you just solder the arms to the copper wire or what? I have about 20 arms on now and there solid but man you risk dripping the original bead you had trying to stick the arm on. Can you explain a little how you went about soldering the arms on. and on top of that. Did you use a torch to do the center ring and a soldering gun to to attach the outer ring to the arms?

I'm thinking of doing three sets of supports like a triangle, rather than four ( + ) all the way around. It would seem that would still be plenty strong enough to handle the job.
    What do you think??

It looks like there is more space on the 3 way version but the distance between them is not that much. Plus it cuts down on about 70 pins. I can't imagine with them soldered tight that, that section of wire could be bent while the balls will be resting on the track right?

oh yea I used a "map gas" torch to solder the central track on. It olny took about 2 hours total probably and I have an extremely tough "wrapped bead" of solder around every wrap of the wire.

GREAT JOB, Mrdummy. I just skimmed through most of this interesting topic, and have these questions / suggestions to add. If we were to build one of these worm types of lifter, could we use a automotive windshied wiper motor (12 volt) and switch and perhaps machine a 12 mm wide spiral groove on a 1 3/4 inch diameter piece of plastic or oak round stock to make this more affordable and easily done? I have a machine that could make the spiral (2 at a time) once I set up the gearing for the correct lead / pitch of spiral. And we could use a pvc pipe with a piece of bar attached internally for each ball pick-up / exit point. Perhaps this has already been done and I just missed it. This is kinda like a grain auger.

After many months, i come back here, and i see thread is still stickied. Still surprised.

The lift is still here and it has working great. But now, made lift by hand is very hard and long work.
If others want make something too like mine, please wait.

I have bought a 3D printer and i have plans to re-design a new ball lift. The new lift is same system as mine, thus also worm wheel, but there will more paths so it can lift 3 or 4 balls at same time. That will speed up ball feed very much and you can still use same small motor for it.

The material will in ABS, thus strong enough. I learn now how to make good 3D models in Sketchup and Blender.
I will let you know when design is started and i will start a new topic/thread but i will also post on Thingiverse site, where many 3D models will be found.
Then you can buy a $600 printer (Prusa Mendel version) and make it for yourself with my STL designs.

The good point the 3D models are very precisie. And complex models are possible. It's almost everything possible you can print from 3D printer.
That makes 3 / 4 ball lifting possible with new complex ball paths to the lift shaft.

There is possible chance i can print parts for you, so you can easy mount together for yourself.
