i put these mini volume controls on my magic monkey

    http://www.geocities.com/luckydog1940/vol.JPG

they are out of the asst. ones above.

i have them turned all the way up.

the volume is perfect when pachislo volume is in the muddle and very quiet is the low position.

i cut speaker ground wires about 3 inches from amp. i soldered one end to single connector and the other end to to one of the double connectors.

after finishing i superglued the two together and put two ties to other wires to hold them in place.

they are similar to syscoms, but a lot cheaper

These are the trimmers and pots from radio shack. Are trimmers the same as pots? What does the M and K stand for and how do I know which to use under what sercomstaces?http://frontpage.kmoraine.com/worksh...io%20Shack.jpg

Trimmers and pots are basically the same. "1K" is one thousand ohms, "1M" is a meg or million. The problem with the Radio Shack assortment is finding 2 the same if you are using a pair. Trimmers usually are not meant to be used as a volume control, but a "set and forget" type of item. They are not rated for many turns up and down.
I think using a pot or trimmer in the 2 to 5 K range would be about right from what I've seen especially on those Sammy tweeters. It seems those in the "M" range are a bit high in resistance, and would only give you a very small turning range from top to bottom (very little control). (I used 1.5K fixed resistors on my Sammies)

Default Radio Shack 12 Pack Potentiometers & Trimmers

I have been using the ones from Syscoms, last week I played around with testing the Radio Shack 12 pack. Just as mention the 12 pack comes with many different styels, the ones that work the best or as good Syscoms are the ones that have a gear like wheel about the size of a dime, also the ones in your picture. As someone else mentioned you set them and leave them, the good thing is that you set them with the factory three postion switch in the low postion and then move to raise the volume. Look in all the Radio Shack packs to find the packs with more of the ones needed. About $4.00 better then $15.00 for five.

I was wondering if anyone still recommends these assorted trimmers at Radio Shack.

I too was looking at the one with the gear-like wheel too (it is suppose to be a 2K one) and PachiAddict recommended a 2K - 5K range.

The one luckydog used however looks like it is 100K according to the picture posted by Lazarus

I was thinking of either getting these or the ones from Syscoms and as stated these will save some money but I am also more interested in functionality.

I was thinking of using them in a Sammy Machine - a King Camel to be exact.

However, I would like opinions if these are a good idea as only luckydog seems to have used them. - Thanks

2K ohm trimmers would be great for the top speakers in a King Camel, but you'll want a 500 ohm pot for the lower speaker. Anything higher will have a VERY narrow range of adjustment.

Do you know if there is anything in these assorted that would work for the lower speaker then?

What are the Syscoms ones - are they all the same ohm?

An electronics parts surplus supplier is probably a better bet than Radio Shack for trimmers (knurled reel or screwdriver adjustable), that way you only get what you need for around $1 a piece.

I just posted additional info on creating an even nicer smooth range of volume adjustment (audio taper like) on a Sammy King Camel here (you could replace similar trimmers for the panel pots I used, or do what I did when testing, I just used woodworker's double-sided tape, or you can glue them inside (or out some of the back holes) with some epoxy or silicone: http://www.pachitalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9763

I just got back from Radio Shack.
I looked at a package with some two a gear-like wheel and it says "25K 4387" on one and the other says "25K 0588"

    Will these still work?

Websherpa, I don't live near any electronic parts surplus suppliers.
So I will have to order everything you used in your post.

I was also wondering what gage of wire I should use?

Those sound like 25k ohm trimmers. I wouldn't use those, they'll be very difficult to get the proper volume level and tough to balance side to side.

Yes 25k is too much,I`ve used 10k ohm pots (radio shack-the source part # 271-215)and they are a little hard to adjust but work fine once you get them set.
Ideally you want 5k or less.

Araknis If you have trouble finding trimmers or pots....most radio shacks have these 10k pots in stock.

Do your fine volume tuning when the machine is in the bonus round.

I use 18-20 guage wire on these

Thanks for the reply, I think I will try Syscoms ones then as these look like they won't work.

The wire guage doesn't matter much in this case, but for reference the King Camels use 22 guage wire, so 22-20 would be ideal.

That's interesting, all my Sammy machines use 24 guage wire.

OK< let me re-phrase "I think my Sammy King Camel uses 22 guage... when I added the extra wire for the volume mods on Sunday I just eye'd the wires to match, and my wire stripper set at 22 guage cut a stranded wire (I always back off a guage to strip), so I assumed it was 22 guage." I only have one King Camel, so I can't speak for all of them and I made an assumption.
