Default Taiyo "Clown" Arepachi Refurb Complete

    Labeled as "Junk" on YJA...
Someone here even said "tooo bad, it woulda been a neat machine"...
Well here she is after about 60+ hours later. Also, what you can't see in the original pic is how cracked and split the original cel was. Almost every nail had a crack or two branching off of it and some ling 5 and 6 inch splits around the ball tracks.
So I'm almost finished actually. I'm currently working on the replacement number matrix that will the original bright pink and yellow borders around the numbers and working on the tiny number stickers that go on each tulip to show which pockets light up when a ball goes in.
I finished it way ahead of schedule thanks to a couple of 12 hour or so marathons over two weekends and spending an average of at least 2 hours a day on it. Once I finally finished the cel's digital clean up, it went together quickly. It was a lotta fun and I learned alot.
This pachinko should look extremely close if not almost identical to how this model looked when rolling off the assembly line.
Going to do some things a little different on this one's brother the zodiac, technique and materials wise. I don't know when I'll start that project. I'm going to shift to my pinballs for awhile I think. I've got tons of new parts for them and they're a whole other ball of wax which I greatly enjoy.
Back to the Taiyo. I had a few hiccups along the way. One was the cel itself. The one on the machine is not the first ones I had made and pictured on here. The original ones weren't quite the right color and I had left off the border around the clown's mouth. Of course, even if you know the exact original colors, they're going to show up different on a computer screen and then change again once it's put to ink. I also originally planned to use acrylic instead of enamel paint on the trim pieces which I knew may not work out. Well, it airbrushed on beautifully but it's just not as durable. It would have been fine for home use but I wanted the best for this machine so after about 4 hours prepping and airbrushing I stripped all the paint off and started prepping it all over again. I used enamel and am glad I did. Very durable and hard as rock finish. Those were the main issues and of course there's the installing everything and then seeing some part that was supposed to go on first. That happened once.
So I'm extremely pleased with the outcome and in person it looks like a no-s**t, new pachinko. I spent alot of time on all the little details to make sure that would be the final result since that was the goal of this project.
The first pic is of it's picture while in Japan and how I received it.
Second two are how it is now.
I'll have a youtube vid up in the next day or so.

Here's another vid. It's very low quality and when I edited the video in Movie Maker it messed up the sound. Anyway, I replaced the burned bulbs so both tulips light up and this is the first time I had 3 of the same number come up.

Finished the tulip number stickers. SECOND pic is of the left tulip but on the Zodiac (I didn't have a pic of the clown tulip before the resto but the stickers were in about the same shape as the zodiac machine's) machine and for some reason the numbers on that tulip though the same, are in a different order. Maybe there's some significance that I'll figure out when I get into that machine. FIRST pic is of the new stickers I made. I just printed them off on sticker printer paper, put on a layer of adhesive mylar, and stuck them on. Such small stickers are almost impossible to work with so I used the flat end of a wooden q-tip stuck to the front of the sticker with a tiny dot of white glue. Much easier to position the sticker this way. Since the sticker has a mylar surface the glue wipes off with the cotton end of the q-tip dipped in alcohol, water, etc.

in Vegas at the moment and passed by the circus circus casino. the sign is obviously the "inspiration" for the cel on this machine.also found out the actual name for this machine is "Throttle 2". Second time I've seen arrangeball cels directly copying another designer.
Ill post some pics of the pinball museum soon.

yep I made my first one a few years ago that was simple- it was a solid blue cel for a powerflash. The arrangeballs I've done take quite a bit of time though. their designs are typically much more complex than simple geometric shapes typical of vintage pachinkos. once I remove the old cel I cut it into quarters to fit in my scanner then restitch and color match using unfaded areas as guides. those are areas of the cel that were covered up by some play field part. I use both Corel and paint.net. it's very time consuming and my least favorite part. in fact, on the green taiyo mars i had someone else do it for me. it's easy though and anyone can do it, just takes patience.
once that's done a print shop will print out the image on whatever you want. I use the highest quality adhesive vinyl that is then covered with a layer of UV resistant, clear laminate and then I put adhesive Mylar over that to make it just about bulletproof.
i think I outlined the process somewhat on here during my taiyo Zodiac (real name is Big Spin) thread.

Very beautiful machine, a superior quality rebuild. You did a wonderful job painting the details in your tulips:
    photo(41).jpg

I was wondering the technique you used to repaint it between the lines.

I've recently restored a Sanyo and you can see the paint on my "hit" tulip needs touch up.

I've been researching tulip painting online and found another example of someone's before and after pics:

    Restore17.jpgRestore18.jpg

I have yet to discover or figure out the technique.

fortunately there's not much to it. all of the painted areas that I've redone are surrounded by raised borders which contains the paint for you. i use both enamels and liquitex brand acrylics which have a high pigment load for better color. i thin that with liquitex airbrush medium but water will dotabs then run that thru a very fine mesh filter. I thin the enamels with testors airbrush enamel thinner. it's higher quality and more refined than their regular thinner. the technique is just to thin the paint enough so that it flows into the minute spaces. use a brush, stick pin, etc to ease it into the smallest spots. for the small areas the paint needs to be thinner which may mean subsequent coats. most of the areas I've redone we're originally matte and acrylics dry to a matte finish whereas enamels can be either. both paints work well and I usually use whichever I have the closest match to.
let everything dry and reapply as necessary. I also use a food dehydrator to speed drying. for some parts that have a textured, painted surface or are large, I'll airbrush paint on to preserve the texture but enamels usually can be painted on and everything's fine.
i recommend getting a set of detail paint brushes also. check out an online store called micro mark. tons of stuff for detail intensive hobbies.
