Well I am glad someone has an idea of what is wrong with it. If I was a gambling man or a fool I would load it and see what happens if I keep the trigger pulled. I had two people tell me they didn't know what may course it but that it being a Higgins was not worth the effort.
So I think this gun is junk. How do I safely get rid of it?

check your phone book for gunshops that buy sell and repair guns

see what repair cost would be or if they would offer to buy it as is

or you could just wait till police do a gun buy back deal in your area they do that here a few times a year and give out 25 to 50 dollar grocery store gift cards for each one utrned in, they all get destroyed by police dept, none reslod.

I agree with LD, try a gun shop that repairs, we would buy parts guns now and then. also try numrich gun parts, they buy old fire arms and strip them down and resell parts, good thing there is it could keep some other firearms around. Easiest is the police turn in but the sad thing is it gets trashed, like the cash for clunkers thing, all the good parts destroyed for a government bad idea but it is a Higgins and it is broken, just don't tell them it is broken or they won't give you the gift card

My Supermatic Citation 22 pistol used to do exactly that, One trigger pull, multiple rounds would fire. Had it repaired, the Sear was worn, replaced it, pblm was gone.

I'll try the gun shop then. That or I cut it down to it's legal limit and keep in next to the bed. If someone brakes in I'll have a better chance of protection.

And for those that might think these mods are all "show" and no "go"...I took it to the range today.

Before modifications, this was very nice "One in the 7-ring and the rest in the 8-ring or better" gun.

Now, it's a "One in the 9-ring and the rest in the 10-ring or better" gun.

more ammo shot in the teams' workup than the entire marine corps. luckily we have huge "dishwasher" contraptions that fit everything from pistols to 50 cals., gets most of the gunk off.
if u like to shoot until you never want to shoot again and then shoot some more, and don't want to be in the regular military, i'll give u my recruiter's phone number! also, this vid is just part of the stuff we do-there's much more that can't be discussed.
