Default First time pachinko, Need some pointers.

Hello all! First time poster and pachinko enthusiast. Off the top I don't know much about the machine that I have found but it is a Sankyo (with bird faces). I have been working on it for about a month on and off as a side project.

I don't have to skills or tools to fully restore the machine but I am trying to clean it up and get it working to an optimal level.

I am mostly looking for help with the restoring, (as best I can). I'm not sure what would devalue the machine. I know I could replace all the screws, polish/ re-paint all the win pockets and metal bits, rechrome the plastic parts on the front, and even get new acrylics for the back and paint the frame. BUT, would this take away from the machine if i wanted to re-sell it? I am a student so money is tight and as much as I would love to fill a room with pachinko, when it comes down to finishing it off I do plan on selling it.

So far I have just been cleaning and polishing. There is some rust, would it be worth sanding the rust with sandpaper and spray painting to prevent more damage? If so should it just be a flat grey to match the steel? (I do have a picture, but I'm having trouble figuring out the uploading of them)

Thanks in adavance. Also, I am terrible with forums and can't figure out how to post the pictures that I have taken. They are about 2mb each (which i know is too big to upload) But I don't know if I can create and album type page for them/re-size them. They are .jpeg

First, WELCOME to Pachitalk!!! Second, check out this link on Pachitalk on cleaning your machine. I think it will be very helpful in getting your machine looking spiffy.

Third, another link that you may find helpful in getting your machine running smoothly is:

Fourth, try using Photobucket to upload your pictures, we'd love to see them.

Thanks! I managed to get one of the pictures to upload but I keep getting error messages for the others

The one I got was of the playfield. Unfortunately it still has the plexiglass covering it and there is a bit of a glare. I do have more of them. Mostly of the front because I thought I would clean the front first before attempting the mechanical things in the back that have a lot of gunk on them.

I'm not sure what year the machine is, and I don't have a copy of photoshop to resize the images. If I don't have any luck over the next day or so I'll try using photobucket to get the images up so I can ask some more specific questions about the machine.

I use MS Paint to resize my photos. Just pull down the Image menu and select Stretch/Skew. Set both the horizontal and vertical stretch to 50% and save.

thanks again! Ms paint works fine. I don't know why I didn't think about that... I've been using windows since 3.1.

I've got a few more of the pictures now!
I've managed to get the silver spray paint off of the wood and polished a bit of the metal but I noticed that some of the pieces had extensive damage to the chome plating. (mostly the loading tray, the area around the ash tray, the overflow tray, and the ball release) Any ideas?

A handy tool for resizing images into manageble (web sizes)

is Image resizer it is a windows power tool

all you do is right click on the image and select which of the 3 preset sizes you would like to convert the image to.

    its quick easy and free..

also it doesnt mess with your original image...

you can d/l it from the Microsoft windows XP powertoys site

I have found that #000 steel wool does wonders for removing rust from the smooth chrome surfaces quickly and easily. Just make sure you wear gloves while using it, otherwise your fingertips will be VERY sore for several days.

You can also use it to work on the metal bits around the ball tray/ash tray. just a word of warning, it's pot metal, so it will go flat colored again fairly soon... If you're just trying to make it look good, I'd polish the nail heads, it really changes the machine quite a bit. I didn't see any close ups, but it looks pretty good.

    Thanks for all the welcomes!

I managed to finish cleaning the front of the machine this week in between job hunting. Other than the polishing of the screws I think I did and okay job. I've attached a picture for the completed work. Obviously I can't re do any of the metal at this point but I did polish it the best I could.

Now for the mystery. I started to work on the back and found a strange piece that I have no idea what it is for. I attached a picture with a main arrow pointing to the piece and a second arrow for where the spring connected to the main unit and the mystery piece. I can't find any mechanical purpose for the piece but it must serve some purpose. Any help would be great! Thanks!

The metal piece (fork) has the two prongs bent on your machine. Normally they would be bent down so they could fit into the track and block the flow of balls. In case you wanted to work on your machine without emptying the supply tray. The normal operation would be for the fork to be up and out of the way. Perhaps in the pachinko parlors this made sense but I can't see any need for this for home use.

Often the forks will be bent like yours or broke off so that the uniformed home user doesn't accidentally engage the part, blocking the flow of balls and complain that their machine doesn't work. Hope that helps.

Hmm, I am interested in the cloth, after i steel wool it to death. Has anyone used the cloth before? Is it a one time use kind of item? Or can u get 2 or 3 projects done with it? Thanks for the links. I was using a 5% or so hydrogen peroxide <-- probably why it didn't get as clean as I would have hoped. Worked well on the playing field though.

Also Thank you thepachinkoman I looked at the part this morning and I discovered the little slots you were talking about. I think I`ll just clean the part and leave it how it is. You are right I think in saying that it serves no real purpose at home.

Will update hopefully again this week, school and such is getting in the way again.
