A friend and I once were downtown (Washington DC) taking pictures, going to museums and stuff. We went to go into the Smithsonian Air & Space museum but, they apparently had changed their security procedures since the last time I'd been in there. Now there were metal detectors and bag searches.

Crap! I had my pocket knife on me!

So, I sat down on a concrete planter, casually palmed my knife, leaned back to "stretch" a little bit, and buried the knife in the plant's potting soil! After "resting" a few minutes, we went into the museum.

When we came out an hour later, I sat at the same planter to "rest", "stretched" some more, got my knife back, and we left!

i went into our local federal building about 9 months ago .all of the doors were locked except for one.that was because they had a metal detector in there.the cops held onto my pocket utility knife while i was in there, and gave it back when i left.

    Nice!!

Most places make it explicitly clear "If we take it, you're not getting it back."

I almost lost two knives in march on a trip to my accountant.

my kershaw, semi-automatic knife that I bought on my last Florida trip (not legal in CA), I noticed before TSA. could not find one of those kiosks to mail it home to me, so I ran out to the taxi stand and asked the first driver to mail it to me (and gave him $20). he tried USPS, but they won't take weapons, so he fedexed it to me. I sent him a thank you note with another $5 later.

second mistake was on the way back from Ontario, when TSA found my Gerber multi-tool, also not a cheap item. this airport had a kiosk where you could mail stuff home to yourself for $10. I did this and did not get the knife back after 2 months. went to the website and complained, didn't get a response, and the tool appeared after a 3 month wait... at least it made it home.

gotta do a preflight check before I leave home so I don't lose any more expensive tools!

wonder if TSA would catch this credit card knife in your wallet?

I was in hong kong changing planes, resenting that we had to go through screening again, and then the woman ahead of me, who boarded at SFO with me, was found to have a can of mace in her purse... so HK doesn't trust other screening airports for good reason
