    Default Latest Arrangeball Projects

Awhile back the following thread was started in the Modern Pachinko forum:
    http://www.pachitalk.com/forums/mode...-pachinko.html
In it I posted the two machines that I would most like to find. So it's a pretty rare occurrence when a coin op arrange ball comes up. Much less two of them. And even less likely the ones you happened to be looking for. So I placed my bids and managed to win 'em both although based on the bidding history it looks like someone was artificially driving the bids up. Oh well, you have to pay to play. Now I did have going for me the fact that they definitely need cosmetic work and that turns away some people as well as being on YJA. But what made my mind up to bid was that the important stuff is there like circuit boards (I definitely don't want to have to go through replacing those again), unique tulips, various external plastics, and so on. And they both power up.
These will both be intensive restorations which is what I enjoy more than playing, with the goal and challenge being to restore them to an as new condition. This will include a new cel on the red Zodiac machine, and probably the other one too. Not sure if I'll go the proven adhesive vinyl route or try printing on a different substrate such as thin plastic sheet. Sort of like a pinball translite but opaque.
The plastic parts on the Zodiac were originally white I believe, and they'll be retr0brighted. All the plastic parts inside and out will be removed, cleaned, and polished as well as every other part. I also plan on sanding down the wooden frame/case inside and out and sealing with a clear sealer to preserve the wood and it's original color. I'm doing that now to my Kyoraku Baseball.
Metal parts polished and frames/finger rest to be rechromed as well.
All the cigarette marks will be sanded down and removed, then the plastic reshaped if necessary and repolished. After that, the recessed painted areas will be redone using Liquitex acrylics. They have a nice matte finish like the original paint when airbrushed.
Then new lamps for the "token empty" and "stop" light and LEDs for everything else.
Any electrical issues will be addressed by my electronics guy and I'll probably have a schematic made for at least one of these.
Originally I was going to wait until these were both done and then post before and after pics but this is going to be a long process. So I decided to post pics as I go. I'll get started in January and hope to have one done by Spring. Then the next one done middle of Summer.

Congratulations on your purchases. I know that bidding on YJA from the states is not even close to like bidding on ebay. You must put in your max bid and they just bid it up to that point and let you have it. I hope they do a good job of packaging as these go at about ninety pounds. Cannot wait to see the finished project. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and spend the money.

Those look like really cool pachinkos. I know you must be excited to get them. I hope someday I will be able to add something like that to my collection.

YJA and pachinkos are always an expensive proposition and having to bid manually adds to the risk factor. But sometimes its the only way to go. Luckily neither auction went to my max bid though.

So how does it work buying on YJA? Is there an English site? If so, could you post the site? How about payment? Is it done through Paypal? How does the currency conversion work? I've found that 1000 yen is about $12.49. Shipping info is sent in English...they are able to translate the shipping info?

Both of these were ready to ship while I was out of the country. So I had to pay the shipping to time it correctly since they go out within one day of payment and I didn't want them rattling in the back of the delivery truck during attempts. Got back to the States yesterday and the mailman just dropped these off a few minutes ago. 3 days from shipping payment to arrival at my door. Not bad at all.
So here's a pic of them unboxed and on a table. They are quite dirty but will have to wait for the new year for their respective tear-downs.
I've decided to have Custom Arcade Grafix do the play fields. It's what they do for a living and will be a top notch product.
Surprisingly, they both shipped with two panes of glass each and that arrived unbroken. That's a first.

    Hi Emmadog,

Do you mean Classic Arcade Graphix. Will they produce the art for you from scans or will they handle all that for you (send them the cell)?

I'm curious as to how their process works.

    Yep, that's what I meant.
I emailed them with details of my projects and I'll post back with their response. I'm pretty sure they will do custom work from pics that are sent their way. Especially since they don't produce products for every arcade game and pin produced, I would expect that they do a lot of one-off products.

Here's the response: "Good playfields are difficult to reproduce. At one time we offered a
10mil thick glossy laminated vinyl playfield but that material is no
longer available. It may be something your local shop can do.
The video and book under our Other section on digital restoration
explains how to digitally restore arcade artwork.

I double checked and we do not currently have anything that I think
would give a good plasticy feel and be durable. A laminated vinyl
print would be the best solution which is like a glossy or matte
finish CPO. If you would like to order this kind, I would suggest
ordering one to see how you like it first. You can select the Custom
CPO $47 option on our Custom Artwork section."

The vinyl is what I've used before and then covered with adhesive vinyl. An all in one product sounds nice and what he's referring to I believe.
I'll keep posting as I learn more.

The two tulips that open on each machine are the very large ones to the left and right of the number matrixes on both machines. The tulip petals on both are bright red and are quite big but are hidden by the larger, multicolored covers. A ball in those tulips will light several numbers as well as light up the spinners. Which numbers exactly are shown on each tulip if you look closely. Do a YouTube search for jinn arepachi and it shows Eddie's clown machine in action.

Some interesting info regarding a chip on the main circuit board of both of these machines. I noticed when going through these machines the they each have one UV EPROM chip. These chips have a widow covered by a label. If this label is removed its data is erased upon exposure to UV light. These chips are now mostly phased out being replaced by flash memory. Anywho, the life spam of these chips is typically 10 to 20 years based on use and temperature. So if your machine is acting up (Eddie and Sharmoni) it may be this chip.
    Fascinating stuff!

Here ya go Mopar. I was out of town when you asked for the pics. So here they are of some very dirty tulips and you can see the number stickers that depict which numbers light when a ball goes in. can't wait to take all these machines completely apart and start fresh!

And a pic of the rear of the tulip showing the solenoid that powers it and another structure associated with the tulip and it's microswitch. Not sure how it all works yet... Hell I don't know if it's associated or not, I'll have to take a closer look.
