Thanks Jeff, I was just cleaning and puttering with it for awhile.
In a pic (which I actually posted here), I had those 2 "L"s tangled with the rods with the weights on them, one on the top, one on the bottom. But things could have gotten messed up, and maybe it'll even work either way. Also 2 screws that attach the jackpot bin to the wooden board were missing, the 2 on that side, so the bin may have moved away from the board enough to allow the rod to move there (it was the outer rod which was between the "L"s, so makes sense).
I still sort of wonder what the outer rod of those 2 with the weights on "does" exactly? Maybe just to add extra force for opening the regulator on the top bin...hmmm

When the lower jackpot tray is full of balls, the two metal rods, one with a weight on it, are in the up position and out of the way of those two "L" shaped rods below. This allows the jackpot payout mechanism to work when a jackpot is scored.

When the lower jackpot tray is empty, the two rods with weights will drop and press the two "L" shaped rods down. Connected to the two L shaped rods is a flat piece of metal with a notch in the lower end (circled in attached pic). It serves as a stop to block the jackpot payout mechanism from making any more payouts. Once the lower tray is refilled, either from the upper ball tray or from user intervention, the weighted lever is raised up again and the machine resumes normal operation.

The reason there are two rods is because there are two ball paths (or channels) in the lower ball tray - one rod for each ball path. If one path runs out of balls before the other, then the coorosponding rod will drop and the jackpot payout mechanism will be disabled until more balls are added.

    I hope this clarifies.

Yeah I can see what you mean. Only difference I can see, is that if the channel runs out of balls on the side with the weighted rod, and that rod drops, it will disable the payout, but the other rod would stay in place which opens up the regulator from the upper tray. Right?

OK I did have it working this afternoon. Not all complete, but the mechanism playing just by dropping balls in to the jackpot cups.

I do need more balls for it though, I ordered 250 from the Pachinko man, and that's not enough. Enough to mess with it, but not enough to really test the regulator for the upper bin. I am getting the impression I might need to adjust the linkage for that regulator though.

The light for the extra ball holding area wasn't working, although I confirmed that the leaf switch is working when I hooked up the wiring. So I took some things off and messed with the leafs to try to tighten the leafs up, and it does seem to be working OK now.

I do have some Pachinko balls that were with the machine, but some I know are junk and some are borderline. What is a good method to clean them? I don't have any of the equipment to do them like the vibration thing or rock tumbler, is there a way to do it using common type of stuff? Or just buy more balls?

1 part CLR to about 25 parts hot water. should be good. i used it a little stronger

if your using Dawn just get a bowl of hot tap water and add a few squirts

rubber gloves would be good too, I went commando, it sure cleaned my hands and nails

My personal preference is to use new balls in a freshly restored machine. They look better and will track less dirt and grime through the machine as you play it.

On a recycler style machine like you have, 500 balls would be sufficient, but I load them with 1,000 so I can play longer before refilling the upper ball hopper.

Balls are cheap on ebay, and you can also buy them from members here on PachiTalk through the Auction site.

Thanks for the comments from both. If I do want to clean these up, if I use CLR, how long do you let them soak?

Does anyone collect these? The ones I have are pretty old. Any sites for reading them to see where exactly they are from? You would think they would be collected like casino paker chips!

if its just minor rust and dirt swirling them around about a min would be fine.

for ones with more rust about 5 mins, if they still look too bad they are slingshot ammo

Leave it to me to turn a pachinko problem into a household repair! Couple (6) balls dropped in my utility sink. No prob, pull off the trap. Broke the collar that screws on to the drain below the sink. So that's fixed. In the mean time I soaked all of them in water and Dawn. Am now sorting out the worse from the better, the better ones I will soak for a short time and the others I will soak longer. I assume a long soak won't hurt. There are some I think are definite ammo but will try anyways, some look pretty nice but will soak in CLR anyways to help brighten them. Oh I got Lima Away toilet bowl cleaner instead, says "calcium-lime-rust" right on it and was cheaper by about 1/2. I think over 1/2 will be fine.

Did I read that correctly? You are cleaning your balls with toilet bowl cleaner???

That's a new one to me!

I got about 2/3rds of my balls in useable shape. I'll have to throw away the other 1/3rd of my balls.

Ok , Ok, Ok DO NOT use Rusted, Corroded or steel balls with the Chrome Plating worn off of them .

Unless you want to Destroy the Pachinko that you have spent so much time restoring .

Get Nice Bright Shiny Chrome Pachinko (11mm or 3/4 " )Balls .
When things don't go right the 1st time , Step back ,Take a break and come back renewed. RGS

Pretty happy with the ones I seperated out. Might be a slight chrome discoloration, no rust definitely. I'm pretty picky, many people would glance at them and think they are new. I think many people would even use some of the ones I rejected. Pretty tedious work.

    3/4" are way to big... 3/4" = 19.04999 MM

i think some are using 7/16th... but since Pachinko balls are so easy to get i would recomend only original... except you on the other side of the pond... with your shipping prices and all...

    stick with authentic Pachinko balls

Ordered another 250 from Billy, well 250 and 25 gold ones. Those do make the payout look more interesting.

I did get a chance to work on it again today a bit.

Although I did order another bunch of pachinko balls, after adjusting it, I can play for a little while with no problem.

Wondering though, is it normal for the lower (jackpot) tray to get replenished from the upper tray after a couple straight jackpots? In other words the lower tray doesn't seem to hold more than 2 to 4 jackpots. After 2 or 3 jackpots the lower tray calls for more balls. If I wanted it to hold more, I guess I could adjust the weights on the arms on the jackpot tray, but possibly it is correct as-is. Before I adjusted it, the regulator that shuts off the flow of balls to the lower tray never closed. Another thing to consider is that I was simply giving the machine jackpots. In normal use, since this is a recycler, the missed balls will also add to the balls in the jackpot tray.

The front glass on mine is real glass, is this correct? I keep reading references to plexi front glass.

I also finished some of the last stuff that needed cleaning on the back and have started cleaning more of the front stuff, general cleaning and polishing the "track", cleaning nail heads and stuff, coming along nicely.

Oh should have gotten pictures up too!

Wife seems to agree a wall mount for this will be OK, saw one on this site in the cabinets section that I might try to do, but I'm not much of a wood worker. I was thinking about Jacks design:

yes once the top hopper is full the winning balls will travel to the lower tray... as more balls are shot the balls will then alternate between the upper and lower tray as needed... balls should travel to the upper tray first untill full then to bottom... with taht being said... thair are lots of variations of this.. some have machines that split balls between top and bottom at all times.. and some to the bottom only...

your description sounds like your machine is working as it should..

as for glass and plexi its a personal choice.. i dont have little kid's so i like glass in front and back.. others use plexi in both...

my guess is that it should be plexi in front and glass in back.. the glass wont scratch as easy from ball travel but the plexi out front will keep the player from banging on it and breaking it...

I cant beleive you posted without PICS
