on that price, that was way above the estimates

But the helmet was an amazing and very stunning find with the mask intact, it should have been Treasure Trove, but the laws concerning that are in need of a good rewriting

    Roman helmet sold for £2m | Culture | guardian.co.uk

Perhaps this case will get that in motion, as I'm a firm believer that items like this should stay as near to the area they are found, or at least loaned so they are on display and not locked away for ever in some private vault

Although you can't blame the finder for wanting to take it to Auction, I do hope the buyer will allow it to be viewed by the public

i have seen the the topic come up a few times about the finders keepers sort of argument.

    something to consider

you have to have laws to protect the historical treasures yet to be unearthed. especially in historically sensitive places.

letting every yahoo with a pick axe or metal detector dig and keep what could be a historically significant find and selling it to a private collector because "he found it" is wrong. especially when it can be in a public museum to be enjoyed by the public.

allowing this sort of finders keepers thing only leads to a grave digging mentality. think of all the historical items that where stolen from countries like Egypt and Greece because well to do treasure hunters dug up and carted off "finds" by the ship load. because well they "found" them.

I'm not saying that the locators of these items should not be rewarded for their finds, but this sort of Historically valuable item should be in the property of the country.

remember we are not talking about finding a few modern coins in the sand at the beach or a necklace dropped by a teen at the beach after a night of binge drinking, we are talking about historically significant artifacts.

Egypt has a huge division of antiquities police... as it should...even then, things can disappear. Recently a Van Gogh was stolen from one of the museums there.

Only thing we find when digging is 60 year old milk and beer bottles from breweries and dairys that are long gone.
