    Default Recursive Hanemono Machine!

I acquired a couple of hanemonos from Moparformances a little while back. One was not working, but was just too cool to pass on.

Pachinko Grand Prix is a pachinko machine about pachinko. The center feature is a little dude with a ball tray, standing in a miniature pachinko parlor, completel with little pachinko machines!

The center feature was borked. The little guy would begin moving as soon as the machine was powered on, but he'd freeze as soon as a ball dropped into a 1 or 2 pocket and not move again until the power was cycled. I wasn't sure if I'd be able to fix it, but the theme tickled me so much that I couldn't resist.

The machine arrived safely on Thursday and immediately went up on my bench. Late Thursday, checking continuity, I discovered a bad connection. When I pulled the plug, I discovered that the contact for the bad connection had completely corroded away. Furthermore, several of the other connections in that plug had self-destructed when I pulled it. A local electronic supply place had the right terminals, and a few crimps later I was able to plug it up and test my fix. It worked!!!

This machine seems to be an early transition from purely mechanical to electronic operation. Payout mechs are totally familiar pure mechanical Nishijin C mechanisms, but the hanemono center feature operation is pretty sophisticated. There are sensors on both balls in and balls out, and behavior changes based on how many balls go in, not just where they exit. Rather than describe it, I'll just link to the video I made.

I have a request, too: There's a scoreboard that shows messages in Japanese when it isn't displaying score. Could someone translate these for me? (Messages are visible in the 1st video, and there's a long scroller of which I made a 2nd video.)

So... Many enjoyable hours of troubleshooting and reconditioning later, here it is!

    (Thanks again Mopar! )

These are all spruikers terms that Japanese shopkeepers (and pachinko staff) might use to lure a punter inside.

It says 'イラッツャイ イラッツャイ' (irashai, irashai!) which is "welcome in, welcome in" and what Japanese retailers of all types yell at you as you enter the doorway of their establishment.

Next, 'デルヨ デルヨ' (deru-yo, deru-yo) which is 'they're coming out you know', 'they're coming out' in reference to the balls from machines. In other words, 'the machines are paying big here so you better get in'

Then 出マス (demasu) and 出ツマス (detsumasu) is more of the same really - 'balls are coming, they have come out, balls come out here'. Sort of like a 'step right up, step right up' feel in English...

Finally, トラセマス (torasemasu) is the causative polite version of the verb 'Toru' - to take or steal. So the idea is 'you'll steal our money off us here' - typical casino/gambling talk.

There is always another machine around the corner...

P.S. Your machine is Nishijin's 1989 version of パチンコ大賞13 or Pachinko Taishou 13 (or 'Pachinko Big Awards 13') : pachimono link

If you want to confirm this, check the back of the machine - the name is printed in black katakana and kanji characters on the mid-left of your machine on that silver/black plate. Your's appears to say Pachinko Taishou only - though many refer to it as パチンコ大賞13 (the 13 stands for 'All 13' balls out). Your color scheme is slightly different to the other model. This was a very popular machine in Japan in the early 90's. I played it!

The 2009/10 updated version of this machine from Nishijin is here

Thank you for the transcription! I can't even pick out most of the characters yet.

That is just awesome! I was already tickled enough to have a pachinko about pachinko... That it also simulates shouting passers by to come play is icing on the cake.

Thanks for the correction and for the links! I think I see what happened... the link from Mopar's original posting was broken, and while practicing my google abuse, I could tell that the English->Japanese didn't match the machine graphics. French 'Pachinko Grand Prix' gives パチンコ賞, I recognized 賞 and then was off and running. (パチンコ賞 doesn't return stuff on mansai777, but 賞 does, and from there copy/paste gets me all over.)

I found this, which was kinda cool:
    80???13???(9)
Long video on (apparently) strategy & machine selection... Had to google-abuse my way through registration to view it.

Muahahah! (I'm super happy -- and kind of surprised -- that I managed to revive it!)

Geez, my favorite... that's a tough question. I love Kappa for the theme and the music, I love this one because... geez... it's a pachinko about pachinko!, and I love Roadworks I because it was my first hanemono and it has a gratuitous peeing cartoon dog on it.

I'd say at the moment that Kappa Boogie is my favorite, with this one coming in a very close second. This may change after I rack up some play time... I've hardly shot 50 balls through each of 'em.

    Oh, how cool!!

It is definitely up at the top of my favorites. I love the animation on this machine, and it has gotten a -lot- of play since I got it working and cleaned up. The little dude with the tray and the ball catching/dumping action is brilliant, and the jackpot music is quite an earworm. I need to work on tightening it up a bit, he dumps balls so quick that I can hardly keep the hopper filled.

Thanks, me too! If I can get the angle right, I want to make one of those endlessly zooming videos.
