Default Vintage Nishijin - repaint plastics?

I just got this vintage pachinko. Everything works perfectly, but the paint is badly flaking off the playfield plastics. The paint is so dry and brittle that just the vibration of playing the machine causes paint to fall off. Every time I play it, I have to clean paint chips out of the bottom of the playfield. I have enough artistic skill to repaint them and have them come out looking very professional. My question is, it there any reason to not do this?

There has been discussions on this very topic in the past - check out this thread and scroll down to the section on repainting parts:

I have repainted parts on my vintages and have had great success using diluted Testor Model Paints to match the old color and sheen.

Please keep us posted on your progress!!

i've had great success with repainting the plastics on various machines both airbrushing and using thinned testor's enamel as mentioned above. thinning the enamel or whatever type of paint works great to flow paint into the nooks and crannies. for larger areas an airbrush is ideal to get perfectly smooth finishes.
only reason i can think of not to is the machine will no longer be "original and unrestored", if that matters to you.

as long as it looks like it did when it left the factory,go for it.that's what restoration is.i like the idea of thinned testor's.

I just did this over the past week. I used testors acrylic on all but the green, I used testors enamel on the green. I must say, I like the acrylic better, seems to be more along the lines of the original. It also clean up with water. I used a very small brush, and then it flowed pretty good on its own. I didn't think of thinning out the enamel, but I'm sure that would've worked too.

I've used both Airbrush Acrylic and Enamel. At first I was reluctant with the Acrylic just because I wasnt sure that it would adhere very well. For sure the key is to make sure you remove all the old paint first.

So far I've had no trouble with Acrylic. On the other hand the Testors enamel will last a lifetime. Only time will tell.

One thing that I have noticed is that mixing Enamel to get the desired shade or tint is a little more difficult. Also having the whole array of colors by Testors would get quite expensive.

Maybe I'm just more used to Acrylic because thats what I used primarily in Art College as an airbrush artist.

I guess it depends on your budget?!

I struggled at first on whether or not to alter the original state of a machine but I quickly got over that after I ripped the nails out of one and replaced the playfield art.

    Hi Stingray,

Thats interesting. How is it holding up? You definitely have an endless selection of colors with oils. Very easy to mix as well.

Did you also thin your paint before applying? Did you use linseed oil?

    Sorry about all the questions

Hard to say how it's holding up, it's not even dry yet. It will be a week at least before I try to play it again. It seems to adhere very well to the plastic though, should be rock hard once dry.

That's why I used them, so I could match the colors as accurately as I could.

Thinned with turpenoid, a synthetic, odorless turpentine.

Thanks for all the compliments, everyone. I'm still doing some detail work on this machine. I'm very happy with how it's turning out. It was a grungy wreck when I got it.

Thank you very much for the stickers, they really do complete the look.

The paint is dry to the touch, but probably not fully cured. I'm being cautious and still not playing it. I can't wait to start playing it, it sure is a lot prettier than it used to be.
