    Question Old XBox consoles

I have ended up with several XBox (original) consoles and would very much like to modify them for use in my gameroom.

One, I came across and purchased several years ago that had been hacked, with a new HD installed, as well as numerous classic video games. It's pretty cool to find some old arcade classics on it, as well as video games from my youth, such as Atari, and Coleco Intellivision.

The others are just original XBox's that I've acquired. I would very much like to modify at least one of them, and install the old games. Unfortunately, i do not have the know-how, and services available previously via Craigslist seem to have dried up. Any suggestions?

Also, I am looking to suspend an old 22" LCD monitor from the ceiling to use with the XBox. It seems I need to purchase a converter box for the VGA signal. Has anyone else done this?

    Any help would be appreciated!

Per most of what I've read on the topic (online), I need one of these (YPbPr Component Video Audio to VGA Converter 1080P xbox - eBay (item 170532561003 end time Sep-25-10 0039 PDT))

An XBox360 will connect with a special cable. An original XBox, however, requires a box. Has anyone done this?

Hmm... Is the 22" lcd a monitor and not a tv? If so, that could be a problem.

If that is the case, it might be cheaper to get a 22" (or-so) tv and hook up the xbox to that using original xbox cables. A 22" lcd tv isn't high def, so it would work fine with an xbox.

have you thought of instead of using a Xbox, to use a PC and create a MAME machine?

since from what i understand your interested in the Older Arcade games?

a Mame machine would definitely give you a lot of options..

I'm trying to use what I have. I think the modded XBox I have has a MAME program in it. The only problem with it is that I have to reset it each time I want to change to another game (or I haven't figured out how to use it properly). Likewise, I have a monitor already, not a TV.

I'm still hoping to find someone who can mod the XBoxes, Otherwise, I do have an old computer I can use. I'm not sure how to get started with MAME on that, though.

MAME is a piece of cake. Google MAME, or go to:
    Latest MAME Release

Download the latest version (currently "mame0139s"). The .exe file is probably what you want.

Then download ROMs (games, in other words), from the link on the left side of the MAME site. Google MAME ROMs, too.

    MAME rocks.

XBox mods are really easy to do. I used to do them regularly. All you need is a soldering iron, Xecuter chip and a set of Torx drivers. Open the case by removing the screws on the bottom of the case. Lift it all out carefully (the HDD is a sensitive thing...). Locate the 8 pin header location and solder the header into it (no major skills required there, perhaps the simplest thing to do) and then solder the extra wire to D0 (it should be shown on a diagram which comes with the chip. That's the tricky bugger. Make sure your iron is between 12-15w. Anything higer and you'll pull the trace off the board (although, I did do it with a 150w soldering gun before... But I wouldn't advise it). Put everything back and switch on. You're now modded!

Once you've got the chip in and working, I'd suggest changing the IDE cable to ATA133 as it garners better tranfer rates from the drive and also putting a bigger hard drive in there. I forget exactly how to pull it off, but I remember you'll need to hook the drive into a PC first and format it in a particular way or something (or was that PS2?)...

Anyway, if you go down the open-up mod route, Xecuter (relatively pricey) and Xenium (relatively cheap) were the ones I used and they're so easy to install with a little patience and a 12w soldering iron... It was the easiest £50 I used to make for what amounted to 20 minutes of work. I'm sure there are still places that sell them.

    Hope that helps! Happy modding!

I Mod'd my xBox with a Spice chip (if I remember right). First one takes a couple hours, but it is relatively easy and goes fast when you get the hang of it.

    Go for it, I say.
