Default Transport Tips for a Newbie?

I'm going to be looking at machines today, and may need haul one home.

I have a truck, tie downs, and some styro for padding... but I've never tried to safely transport one of these before.

Any advice to help me avoid stupid mistakes?

    Thanks!

Going alone? Put it up front with you.

Just bring a blanket and wrap it. The vintages are pretty light compared to the moderns.

Just throw it in the back of a pickup truck. It will slide around, but who cares. Right?

I may have a passenger and/or multiple machines. If I can, I'll carry up front... but if I can't, what's my best strategy for bed-carry?

Question answered, nevermind! Pretty sure it will just float over the top of the bowling balls and metal fence posts already back there.

    Glad I could help!

Seriously though, a blanket to wrap it in and secure it properly so it doesn't move or get hit and you will do fine. Keep in mind these were used in commercial gambling establishments when they were new. They are made for some abuse.

In my truck or van I'll secure multiple machines with outside patio cushions slid between each machine and then wrap the whole package with a blanket. I finish with bungee' to keep it from sliding around.
For one machine front seat is best I can even fit a pachislo there

also rember that all pachinko like to be kept upright.. well the balls like to be upright...

if you know how to get all the balls out then you can lay them over.. but a machine that has balls in it and gets layed on its side will most certanly jam up once placed back upright...

i carry them in my truck all the time put foam in between them and make sure your proctect the plastic parts.. i like to lay them head to toe so the ball trays are not agenst each other..

    hope this helps

    Thanks for the tips!

I ended up making two trips. One with a modern in cab and a vintage in the back (didn't like the way that one rode... it was kind of reclined in the back but not well secured) and one with vintage in the back, upright against the front edge, cushioned with styrofoam insulation board, bungee'd, and with a ratcheting tiedown pulled up just barely tight to provide a hard stop if I had to swerve or something. I took some pics, which I'll post at some point.

All five made it home with no trip-related damage.

    Yeaah... five. Yikes!

Okay, here are some pics of my haul. (Finally!) Ya, I know it took me a while but I've had more toys than sleep in the past day or so!

    1. Mizuho ??? Fully functional after clearing a ball jam and faking a missing cover for the ramp leading to the payout mechanism, very clean.
    2. Sankyo Big Powerful Fever. Fully functional very clean.
    3. Nishijin C. Very dirty (packed full of small gravel and mortar dust), water stains, jammed. Functionality unknown but looks reasonably complete w.no broken parts.
    4. Nishijin B. Another full of gravel. Scuffed/faded playfield, missing ramp cover, but otherwise appears reasonably complete.
    5. Kyoraku ??? Front panel says Sun 406. Also full of gravel. Very dirty playfield, but does not appear to be badly scuffed or water stained, might clean up nicely. Missing some covers on the back, but seems to have all mechanical parts there. Some parts appear to be made of copper?
    6. Last pic (if they stay in order): How I hauled 3, 4, and 5. This arrangement worked pretty nicely... I felt like the machines were secure and unlikely to take damage even if I had to swerve or brake hard.

I also have (guessing) ~ 1200 balls now. 800 or so with the first two, and another 400 jammed up in the 3 gravel covered critters.

I (of course) couldn't just stuff them in a corner in the state they were in, so I spent a few hours with a shop vac and a compressor getting the worst of the filth, gravel, and grit off and out. Once de-filthed, I coaxed the jams out of them (which gives me high hopes that the mechanisms are recoverable... no disassembly needed) and stored them safely until I can start on them.

Like I said in my intro thread... CL yielded up a bounty. The first two give me something that immediately slings balls, and I know that the last three are probably not good museum-piece candidates, but I wanted something to tinker on and got them for (I think) a good price.

    I'm pretty excited.

Also: Posting this here because I know some places frown on posting to older threads...

Moparformances, your vids on models and operation were super-helpful to me. I studied up on them before going to look at machines, and thanks to them I not only knew more-or-less what I was looking at, but I was also able to find the right fiddly bits to poke to get the ball jams harmlessly cleared. Thanks!

Those are some nice looking machines! I hope you get around to making a video of that modern one with the LCD running.

They look to be a really nice selection of pachinkos, I'm intrigued as to the 'gravel' but do hope you have fun cleaning and tinkering

You have a good balance with some to play and enjoy instantly and others to examine and marvel at the workings as you restore and adjust them

You will find a lot of help and encouragement here at PT especially regarding the Vintages, where there is an excellent 'sticky' thread compiling a list of useful threads to peruse

Oh and we try not to do too much frowning here, cos everyone knows that will just give you wrinkles

there is a packrat mouse that does this, at my home up north the inside of my mothers sewing machine was filled with small pieces of gravel and dirt. i had to remove it and shake out what i could then clean and oil all parts.
a hollow door we had was filled with the same stuff in the bottom.

we lived out in the country and mice were a problem in cold weather
