That is a really scary thing... my kids and I were discussing it last night. Any ideas on why it is almost a perfect circle?

As Civil Engineer I have had to worry about various sinkhole issues over the years. Believe it or not, if a city or state has done any geotechnical studies they already have a pretty good idea where they could possible occur. To fix some of the ones that have affected my work projects, the costs have gone into the the millions and 10s of millions in some cases. Not sure how you fix one that large. USUALLY you pump yards and yards of grout into the ground or do something called pinpiling or use a comibination with GeoTextile layers. As usual nature will always win since to fight something like that you had to keep the water away and that was not happening.

that hole looks to me to be fake .just like if a giant drill bit were to drill a hole in the face of the earth .

That is what is strange about this hole... it looks fake, but it is not.
To me, it has the look of a cheap horror movie's portal to Hades. It is amazing to me that it has taken this form naturally.

Sinkholes TEND to occur with water runs through the underground base removing all stablizing material. Around my area you get them when the area below has had limestone deposits which can be washes way rather quickly with water.

Sadly its happened before in Guatemala City..In February '07 there was another sinkhole there that killed some people..It is thought that it was caused by a ruptured sewer main..Here are a few pictures of the one from 2007!!

Every administration blames everything on the previous one, which makes it difficult if your a two term-er...and a change from Obama blaming it on the previous administration.
