    Default Speaker Static

I purchased an IGT Austin Powers from an ebay vendor approximately 3 years ago.
It's in exellent condition, except for excessive static in both speakers.
    It comes & goes.
I had asked the vendor about it upon delivery, & he assured me it was a trait of "ALL" IGT machines.
I can't believe that would be the case.
So I've checked my connections: None are lose, dirty or broken.
No visible corrosion, I sprayed the connections with a can of Dust Off, just to be sure.
There are no cracks or wear in the insulation of the wiring.

Anyone have any ideas as to what I'm missing? (dice?)

Maybe a new set of speakers, new wiring... both?

some machines with speakers near the lcd screen have noise problems, maybe you could try shielding the lcd cable or speaker wiring.

The LCD is topside & the speakers are in the token tray.
Notice in the 1st pic the 2 speakers at the bottom of the door.
If you follow the red speaker wire to the top right of the pic, you'll notice it runs to the left of the reels.

In the 2nd pic the 2 speaker connectors are on the left edge of the board just above the reels.
The cable for the LCD runs from the top of the door along the left of the cabinet & intersects the speaker wire, on it's way to the board at the top center.

The 3rd pic displays a closer view of this intersection.

LD, you think this is the culprit?
How would you suggest I shield these two?
Maybe I should remove the panduit strips & reroute the LCD cable to the top of the cabinet?
...provided there is ample cable to do so.

I see in the first picture 2 wires coming from about the center of the door. Are they wires for the belly glass light? Routed right along with the speaker wires, may cause an issue.

Yes CP, that is the wire to the backlight for the bellyglass.
I went to see if that would help, but as I mentioned earlier... it comes & goes.
And at this time I have no static... typical.
So I'll wait for her to start acting up before I make the change, so I know if it was the problem.

The static isn't a low hum like a Sammy, it's a crackle & is very LOUD at times.

I isolated the belly backlight wiring from the speaker wire, & still have static.
I haven't had time to do much else.
I'll sever the panduits tomorrow to see if separating the speaker wire from the other cables help.

So IGT knowingly builds machines with the cables crossed in a manner that it causes audio static?
If this is the case, I can't see why their machines have been so popular.
I'd almost have to believe the blueprint isn't the cause...
but always try the simple fix 1st, right?

    Ok...
~I removed all panduits binding the speaker wire to any other type of cable,
~I removed the speakers & cleaned metal dust (resembling tiny steel wool pads) from between the speakers & the speaker covers,
~I inspected the diaphragms of the speakers & found no punctures or perforations,
~I cleaned the magnets of the speakers with a dry cloth (removing a small amount of metal dust from each)
~I sprayed a bit of canned air in the speaker cover & into the backside of the diaphragms
~I re-inspected the wires for any breakage & found none
    ~I rechecked the connections

    ~I still have static
~I have (at the time of posting) 150 views & only 3 replies (offering 2 solutions [the other 4 replies were my own])

Sound off tech-heads, where do I turn my attention now?
Anyone owning "ANY" similar IGT pachislo,
please check your machine & tell me if you have the same speaker connectors above the reels as I do.
    ~One 2pin connector
~One 3pin connector (of which there are only 2 wires)

Maybe it is an IGT thing. I used to own an Addams Family with the static noise and I once saw an Austin Powers with the same noise.

    Thanks for the reply Mark.
Did you ever come to a resolution?
I noticed "Austin Powers" & Alien in your signature... Have you experienced this with those as well?

My Dance night never had any static, but, that model has a small digital display on the right of the reels instead of an Lcd.

I think that the manufactures don't care it there is a bit of noise due to the fact they are in such a loud environment that no one will hear it anyway and why spend the r + d money if you can pump it out for a few yen less

knock on wood I haven't any speaker issues with any IGT's. Can you swap speakers or sound board with another game? Maybe rewire the speakers with a better quality wire. One time on a Bally game there was an exposed door switch wire rubbing on metal and that was somehow causing static on the bottom speaker. Not sure why or how but fixing that wire fixed the speaker.

Last night I received information to turn my attention towards the volume control switches.
So earlier this morning I purchased 1 can of silicon lubricant spray & 1 can of electronic contact cleaner.
It seemed like the proper protocol to use the cleaner before applying the silicon.

After applying the contact cleaner spray to both volume switches & switching between all 3 volumes continuously (& repeating twice)...
I have yet to hear any static!!!
As a matter of fact, there's not even the slightest hum, just sweet silence. (with the exception of the programed audio, of course)

I had left the power on for a few hours, played for almost an hour...
Then powered it down for an hour & back on for another hour.
    Not the slightest crackle yet.
Always the pessimist, I switched Austin back on 35 minutes ago to check before posting, & he's still "Groovy Baby, Yeah!!!"

If it returns, I'll apply the silicon lube for good measure...
but for now, I'd hate to spoil a good thing. (because that's my type of luck)

Thanks to all that offered their advice
