Default Just Scored a TX-Sector by Gottlieb

Ok I knew this would happen but not this quick. I purchased a TX-Sector from a good friend for 200 bucks. I currently own a Mario Andretti and love it, but back to the TX-Sector. I was told it would not boot. When I powered it on the GI lights come on and the translite comes on, BUT I can smell a electric burning, so I immediately turned it off and unplugged it. My tech guru will come out on thursday to look at it, he says if the System 80b board is not booting then a coil could be stuck energizing and getting hot which in turn would cause the smell of burning. What do you all think? I know I will not power it on again until it is checked out by a professional. But I noticed the system 80b CPU LED was flashing fast when it was powered on. Could it be a simple thing as a fuse or we looking at a CPU eprom issue possibly.

Also there is a battery holder installed and no acid damage to see anywhere. I am hopeing it is an easy fix to it to get it back running again and not to smell like burning electronics. The cabinet is a 9 out of 10 and playfield is a 10 out of 10. it was made in 1988. Any tips on what we I can tell the tech guy to look for would be helpful. I can't wait to get this pin fired and up and playing again. Pictures will come shortly.

nice lookin pin ya got there. i dont even know where to start with the electrical. there are so many wires in a pin. i would let the tech guy turn it on quickly, so he can get an idea whats goin on. when i repaired my lethal weapon machine, trial and error eventually got it fixed. just dont stick your tongue on any wires.

With a burning smell so quickly, I'd say a solenoid is stuck on. Most of the solenoids in the pin are short duty (just pulsed on) - so if one gets "stuck" on two things happen:

    - The transistor that switches the solenoid overheats
    - the coil overheats, damaging the varnish on the wire and melting the plastic core and sleeve.

You can easily find the source if that is the case - the solenoid will have discoloured.

Get your tech to replace any overheated solenoid (the best test for this is if you can pull out the plastic sleeve that is inside the coil - an overheated one will be distorted and hard to pull out), as well as follow up the chain replacing the driver transistor and the pre-driver transistor.

The primary cause of a locked on solenoid is a failure of the driver transistor - and it loves taking the pre-driver out with it.

A great source of info for yourself (and your tech) starts here:

Well just an update on tx-sector I am trading it for a bad girls gottlieb pinball from 1988. Even trade since I wanted the bad girls anyway and settled for the tx-sector, the guy that bought the bad girls said let's trade I said ok no problemo. So today I get bad girls. No youtube video's of this game at all, which suprises me, so I will have to add the first. Also the ipdb shows it being pretty good, I love the 80's chicks with their hair playing pool on the backglass. All middle aged overweight men should own a bad girls pinball imho. LOL> PICS and video to follow soon.

<:edited 8:18am:> cool edit works now and no time restrictions!!!

    try it!!! J/K
