    Default Latest Project: Marine Battle

I found this machine going cheap on Craigs List. When I saw it I soon discovered why it was so cheap. The listing stated that it was non working but all it needed was a ribbon cable splicing back together. The seller forgot to mention the actual condition of the machine.

It looked like it had been living outside for a while. The top of the cabinet had water damage, all of the chrome was covered in what looks like green mould spots and the inside had all the usual suspects present. Them being leaves, seeds, cobwebs, dead insects and to finish it off mouse poop.

The last pic is after it had been cleaned out.

So is this machine worth saving?

Well I think so. I'll keep you posted on the progress.

Here's a pic of the front after I had cleaned up the face plate and bezel.

I used some auto scratch remover to clean the chrome. It turned out really well but it did take quite a bit of polishing. I also cleaned the reels These had to be removed as they were filthy inside and out.

I do it every time. I should have taken more before pics but I'm always too eager the get started.

Thought it was time to give you all an update on what's going on with this machine.

I replaced the main ribbon cable that was totally shredded. Luckily I had some old ribbon cable from a King Camel that got parted out so using the same connectors I simply exchanged the cable.

I turned on the machine and Hay Presto it works. After playing a few credits I soon noticed that non of the lights up top were working. After further investigation I soon found out why.

It looks like that mouse that had gotten into the machine had caused quite a bit of damage.

I'm pretty sure I won't be able to find a connector like this

So I'll just solder the wires direct to the PCB. After all I plan to spend zero money on this project hopefully just use stuff I have lying around.

All of this is going on in my 4' x 5' workshop. As you can see it's a bit of a mess.
