My buddy was in basic when the same thing happened...
the sargent threw him to the ground in the sam manor.. but when he hit the deck his face broke his fall and nearly broke his nose and scratched / cut up his face really bad.. when he came up they all thought the gernade got him in the face...
like that guy they are both lucky

In basic I had the guy in the bunker next to me toss his grenade to the right instead of straight out, I was on the ground already with my instructor and heard it land in front of our bunker.
the instructor and I got showered with dirt and pebbles
we only were allowed to throw one gerenade each, I wish it could have been a few more

Grenades , with the proper mindset training prior to giving a LIVE one makes the wooden and plastic target in training Disappear . I never had to lob one at a foe or combat target in my 20+ Army Career .
Plenty of Grenade simulators lobbed at medics trying to get the honored Expert Field Medical Badge
When things don't go right the 1st time , Step back ,Take a break and come back renewed. RGS
