I agree, and have stated before, that a book as a reference would serve us well to look for answers. But I still enjoy this forum very much. And yes at times things get off topic and we have friendly (and sometimes not so friendly) banter back and forth. But I believe that is what makes some of this so much fun. We joke back and forth and learn about the machines as well. We discuss our horror stories and our great buys and all sorts of stuff. I hope that never changes!!! :-)

You don't understand the search fuction Bobby.

As to fear, no not fear, very leary to the reasons why, I see you have not been around a long time, not intended to disrespect you. Just age brings forth a wisdom of watching the pattren of things, that run in our lives.

Most people don't do the things they do for the reasons they say. There are other things at play.

You are correct--but that could easily be helped if there were better instructions on its use. For example, there is no mention of the ability to use quotation marks in your search. It only mentions that you may use AND or OR to combine terms. That and the "search for all terms" function do not have the same effect as using quotes.

Bobby, write that info up in how you see it to help a new person, and I will post it in the Tips - Tricks - Frequently Asked Questions.

You input will help make this a better user friendly board.

    Thank you Greg/Arby

    Greg,

It would be my pleasure but I obviously don't know the ins-and-outs of the search function, I only now know that quotes can be used for exact matches.

I don't believe that quotes work for getting an exact match. I think they are just ignored. I tried the following tests:

"metal slug" with match all words checked. It looked like it returned only posts with "metal slug". But that was an illusion caused by the fact that "metal" and "slug" are most likely at appear next to each other.

I tried a second test, "metal pulsar". Again checked match all words. What I got that time is all threads with both "metal" and "pulsar" even though they never appeared together.

So, the quotes do nothing. This was pretty much confirmed by looking the php website where they explain how the search function works. No mention was made of using quotes, and the way they describe the index the search engine builds, it doesn't look likely that it could find exact match multi-word searches.

It's the same illusion I mentioned in my previous post. If you had searched for:

"understand you don't bobby function this search"

it still would have come up with this thread. (I know, I just did it.) It's not looking for an exact match, it's just looking for a thread with all those words.

That certainly proves my point, I don't know the ins-and-outs of the search function and it could be better. :-?

Finding information here is somewhat difficult as the search engine has much to be desired, the posted subject of threads are often vague or misleading, and the threads often go WAY off-topic.
I am truly sorry that we don't run quite as tight a ship here as you would like. We don't tell people what to talk about and if a subject gets off topic, it's because the users wanted it that way.

I have no intention of policing each and every thread to make sure it stays on topic enough to meet with your particular standards. Give me a freakin' break!

We let anyone with the ability to register, in and talk about whatever they feel like. You state you can't grasp the search funtion. Some how this is our fault?

It's a message base where people share their feelings or thoughts on many issues and often those thoughts tend to change over the course of the life of a particular thread.

Now if you want a refund, just let me know!

I want a puppy, but my lease says no. I want a black and white puppy with salami breath, and a cute wet nose.
Oh, I'm sorry, the voices ran off with the cordless keyboard again and got off subject. :smt083

Lighten up dude--you feelin a little touchy today? The search engine is obviously not perfect, no biggie. My point was that a book with an index would make finding info easier. Care to dispute that?

I can care less if threads go off-topic. I'm as guilty as the next guy. It makes for more interesting reading but it makes it harder to find information. Care to dispute that?

You were the one who brought up the off topic take. If you don't care, what was your point? "The search engine is not perfect." Yes, and what is? Now this book has an index, and I wasn't even aware it was written yet. :-?

Seems like another book was written once by Dave Helmig. As a matter of fact, he even called it a Bible. You should go drop $29.95 on it. I'm sure you'll find it much more in depth and easy to read than our ramblings.

In defense of the board here....it's FREE! FREE I TELL YOU!! Time by admin and moderators is DONATED, as are the opinions, insights, comments, critiques, etc of all the users that post here. It's higher quality than most scratch and dent items you will ever BUY, and if you have a question or concern relating to your pachi (or wife not wanting you to buy another pachi, or where to stuff your pachi in case of aircraft doing water landing, or if it needs its own oxygen mask, or......) or how to search the forum, there's a GOOD chance it'll be addressed, and even ANSWERED. I, personally, see this forum as a deal at TWICE the price! Even with the threads meandering off-topic....it's still cool. We CAN be redirected back to what it's all about....but we're not like reading a service manual. There's PERSONALITY around here.
Now, then....back to our regularly scheduled program.

Bobby you, my man are dy-gressing, Books are fine, but will never as upto date as a floating board. You know this, you have grown up it the Computer age, where an old farth, like me. I had to learn the card catalog at the Libary to get a stale book.

I have bought any and all books on this subjust. Even those in japanese.
The day the author puts the book to bed. It becomes out dated. Just a referance book.

On the board we will get the latest infomation out released. The point about the AT (Assist Time) games and ST (Stock Time) and CT (Challenge time) models available and the law changes have already been talked about on the board.

Books are fine, but very dry & stale.

So, please don't kick, those giving you the latest info FREE. Hell I could be using this time to work on my Doc. Thes. of the chrispness of Fried Chicken.
