the key he is refering to is the one that (almost?) all moderns use. They don't fit in any of the machines I have from before the mid 90's

Yes but I would say closer to 98-99%. some machines need a longer shaft to fit past the plastics and a few will not turn but that may be an issue with the locks themselves
