    Default Single shot restoration progress

A half hour here; a half hour there. I continue to poke away at my ever-growing "restoration" (customization) on the 50 Foot Woman machine.

I got the vinyl, adhesive backed, laminated artwork back from ProLam today. Here are some pics: 1) next to cell, 2) a close-up, 3) a picture of the birdy that is an homage to the original cell art (exact copy in miniature).

Here is the lovely handiwork of the old case, half rotted as I got it, next to the new case which is jatoba top and bottom and maple on the sides. Also a close-up of the dovetails (a perfect dovetail is enough to make me weep with delight). That jatoba wood is the same density as ironwood and murder on my blades.

The face frame will be solid jatoba with maple inlays.

Here's the old ball return, which I am substituting with a carved solid wood one. Behind it is my template for the router to rough out the shape (still need to do the ashtray bit) and behind that, the lam'ed up strips of jatoba and maple.

Also a closeup of the wood sandwich.

Thanks. About $20 for the printing and about $20 for the lamination. And several hours of the guy's time as we brainstormed and played around his shop with various materials.

Those wood stains could not come through as the art is printed on thick automotive body graphic vinyl. We discussed a primer for adhesion but he has had bad experiences with gassing from paints and primer causing lifting. Also, we discovered that it permanently adheres to the wood. So I'd better get the placement right on the first try!

Okay, Mopar, I'm simply honored by that comment.
I wanted it to be a surprise, but I just can't wait. As an homage to you, as one of my many Pachitalk heros, attached is a picture of what I'm using for the inset ashtray.
If you can't identify that in 20 seconds, I will start to doubt your Mopar godliness. I'll give you a hint: this has something to do with my first car.

'67 Dart rear armrests. It's going to be lovely.
Sometimes I feel naughty about the massive modificaitons I'm making to this machine. About the only thing left will be nails (highly polished, of course).

I can't tell. Will the center jackpot cover any "important" parts of the picture. Not that some of her parts are more important than othersSomeone that big...all there parts are important

The colors of the wood are great! I never thought of making new trays out of wood.

And here I thought making a jackpot wing support from wood would be impressive.

    Geeze... you are the man!

Your machine is going to look awesome! Keep up the good work and keep those photos coming!

    Thanks digital,
The biggest challenge was to lay everything out so that important "parts" wouldn't be interfered with. I scanned the old cell cover, made it semitransparent, and overlayed it on my graphics field as I worked. Good to go there.
I never thought of a wood tray either, until I got fed up with trying to make the old metal one look presentable.

    Thanks key,
I think a wood jackpot wing would (will!) look cool! There, my ever-expanding project just grew again. See how I did that?
My wife thinks I'm nuts, as do most people I know. I'm having a blast, although I wish I could work on it in longer stints (this career thing really cramps my style). It's definitely a labor of love. I figure, it will be a pachinko, a work of art, and a piece of furniture all at the same time. What's not to love?
Like my car and remodelling hobbies, I tend to want to restore the biggest piece of poo I can get my hands on. This is no different. I think this thing was at the bottom of the ocean for awhile.

The addiction, the madness, it's hard to contain. You can't stop it, only contain it (for awhile).

I wish I had the tools (and contacts) you have to do some of those modifications myself, I could do some very cool things.

    Got...to...figure...out...my...photoshop...

Great work Sioux, that's looks freakin awsome.

    Thank you!

I have to admit, I do use these types of projects as an excuse to buy the tools that I "need." It's an old tactic-- the wife is wise to it.

    No special contacts.

BTW, I switched some time ago from Photoshop to a program I like better called paint.NET. It's fairly intuitive and just plain fun to play with. And, it's free!

Okay, got to do a little woodworking today.
Below you'll see the ball return tray-- still some sanding and finishing to do. Jatoba and maple.
Also, a mock-up of the front frame to make sure all the painstaking mortise and tenons fit together okay (they do!). I couldn't resist placing the unfinished cell under there as a sneak preview.
Still need to slap that frame together, do the maple inlays, make the glass slot, wood cell features, piano hinge, lock...
Long project. Can you say "overkill?" (my wife can)
