Smile 2nd Playfield Resto, Nishijin Model A, FINALLY Done

    Hello Everyone,

After almost 3 months I finally finished this guy. With the fact that I travel in my job it was hard to make time for it but ITS DONE!

Once again this was an experiment in technique. Not neccesarily chosen as a particular favorite theme but it was in the roughest shape compared to my other machines. A good candidate.

Every square inch of this machine was dismantled and refurbished.

Here's a list of major things done:

    1. Completely new Playfield/Cell. Reproduction of original art with added elements for customization.
    2. Stripped and refinished all wood pieces. Dismantled frame and stained. Front frame stripped and urethaned in natural. Stained back of playfield.
    3. All mechanical removed, meticulously cleaned and reinstalled.
    4. Playfield plastics/pockets repainted and customized.
    5. Converted electrical to 7.5v bulbs with 9v battery.
    6. All metal brackets, and metal parts were cleaned with a wire wheel and clearcoated.

Of course all nails were removed, tumbled, polished and reinstalled.

The biggest challenge was the playfield. My art was reproduced at Kinkos and protected with 5mil Duralar.

The color reproduction wasnt what I expected. I take that back, I did expect it but was hoping that I would be pleasantly suprised (based on my past experience of copies of my artwork). My original was much more vibrant. The scale isnt exact either. The copy turned out slightly larger. I decided that it would work in this case.

    Hope you approve!

WOW!! That looks awesome! A true "restoration!" You have a brand new vintage now.

Just curious... how many hours would you estimate that it took to complete from start to finish?

    Excellent work, Gordon.

    Thanks Everyone!

You know Jeff, I started keeping track of my time but lost track probably around the 20th hour. I would suspect somewhere around 60 to 70 hours over the course of 3 months. I could probably reduce it down to the normal 50 to 60 hours with a laid out game plan. There was a bit of experimentation with the playfield art that took some time. Painting the playfield pieces was also time consuming because I would change my mind on color, remove the paint, and start over.

I have a pretty good idea how the next one is going to be done so it may not take as long.

I've seen some great restorations on here but I believe yours set the standard. Great attention to detail to say the least plus we all learn from your techniques. I know where you are coming from with the traveling for your job thing. I'll be heading out soon for 5-6 weeks and I've got a machine coming in that I'm eager to get to work on. But as someone else mentioned, no work equals no pachinkos.

I know what you mean my friend. Dont do it too often but I did a 5 weeker last year. Sure makes you appreciate the Pachinkos (and your family) even more.

    Thanks for the compliment!!

What are you talking about Mopar!! You've completed far more machines then I have with quality work, consistently!

Dont sell yourself short. You and LT have some quality machines!! Far better than my collection. I take the leftovers that nobody else wants and bring them back to life.

I just havent shared anything with the group in awhile so I thought I'd get caught up.

    Thanks for your compliment.

Thanks Chewy. If not for your enthusiasm building your machines I may never have had the incentive to keep at it!

Unfortunately I'm caught up in the Corporate Rat Race and couldnt make a living doing what I really want to do. Early retirement would be nice though! (who am I kidding)

    Thanks again!
