well back in the late 50's and early 60's I always bought recorder players or radios that had a tone control.
it did make a world of difference even with the cheap little speakers.

I pulled apart a set of computer speakers that the amplifier fried on and put the 3" speaker into the spot where the very shot tinny speaker was on my Fever Powerful III. Made it sound a LOT better.
