Default is this worth shipping back from hawaii?

my sister's friend has this machine, don't know how much yet, but will cost me a bit to ship back.

    is it worth it?

compirate gave me a couple links already.

    is it a mahjong themed?

A great machine - I used to play this one in Japan in the early 90's.

If you like this period for early deji-pachis, I say grab it. It's a classic of the time, and was wildly popular in Japan when released.

Save it from an uncertain future!

To answer your question, no it isn't.

It's based on the game Shogi.

Actually, I'm a bit confused about the theme now. The tiles do appear to be mahjong tiles, but the name of the machine seemed to refer specifically to Shogi (ie. 麻王 is 'asa oo', where 'asa' means hemp/flax and 'oo' means King/Ruler and in some cases, King (for senior player) in the game Shogi.

So maybe it's just 'King Hemp' (literally) and ignore the Shogi reference. They probably are playing mahjong, given the Chinese theme...

King Hemp has arrived from hawaii to berkeley...

I have been working the cruise ship for a couple weeks, so several boxes are waiting at my friend's office in hayward...I think I over did it in january/february, as there are more boxes than will fit in our volvo station wagon!

anyway, this is the first to get back to our house, and it is the king hemp we discussed in january, possibly mah jong themed tiles spin in the center.

machine is a nishijin C style ball path, I think similar to the marilyn monroe in the electronics.

damage from hawaii included a cracked front tray (probably model cementable) and the transformer got ripped out of it's frame. sis didn't subbox the front trays as I always do these days... oh well, can't complain b/c she went and picked it up and boxed it for me.

weighed almost 80 pounds with the wooden box frame around it, heavy TV box, and probably 1,000 balls.

typical dust, cobwebs and front frame rust. I'll spend a couple hours today cleaning her and see how it plays.

it's so good to be back home to pachitalk and my machines. out on the ship I only had pictures of my babies to look at, and a couple iPhone pachinko games... I couldn't even play the slots when we were at sea... forbidden for staff to go into the casino or sit on bar stools...

    couple questions:

the chrome plating on the plastic knob is worn, so this machine got good use... any way to repaint/chrome it? maybe I should just look for another, less worn, knob?

I remember someone mentioning the magic eraser sponge thing. I found one under the kitchen sink, while repairing the disposal, and wondered if they were good on chrome or plastic? (in addition to the 00 steel wool, miracle cloth and never dull)

yes, vader is in hayward. hopefully, I can pick it up tomorrow.

still working out total costs, since I don't know what fedex charged (put it on my friend's account). I have paid kiai $218 for his part. when I get the fedex bill (the real cost, without discount), I will post details.

for $600 that some vendors are charging, shipped, I would say that's reasonable. this machine I got cheap and it's cyclic (good or bad depending on your viewpoint)

Not sure if a Sankyo interchanges with a Nishijin, perhaps in the old days

It can be re-chromed, if you really want it to be. Not sure you'll find a replacement that's better, it would probably be on a machine you'll want too.

Lots of plastic chroming services on the web.

I can't believe someone would sell that for $55.00 For that price I'd keep it and play it.

well, the guy liked it enough to make a nice red cabinet around it.

his wife didn't like the noise of the machine...sound familiar?

I put a couple different resistors on a switch on my marilyn machine so it goes from off, to really quiet to medium (to get the wife to let me keep the machine in berkeley).

suppose it's my gain, eh? will post more pix and some video tomorrow.
