Default Temple of Poseidon - Cape Sounion Greece

During the holidays i was out and about with my best friend who came out to visit me for the holidays all the way from Vancouver, Canada.

it was a great visit and we did a lot of sightseeing.

I was able to take a few pics one of them was a 360 Panorama of the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion.

    Temple of Poseidon

    Hope you guys like it.

It is amazing to me that something that old is still standing.
Wikipedia says it was built in 440BC.
What also amazes me is from the looks of your picture, it looks virtually unguarded from anyone that wants to go near it.
I do see somewhat of a fence around the area you took the photo from.
Do they allow anyone to go near the columns ?

Great photo! Are you using a special camera to do that?

Too bad there is grafitti on the rock at your feet.

Get a really nice camera, a special panorama head for the tripod, a very expensive fisheye lens, some not too cheap software and a lot of practice, and you too can be Panorama-man!

    Amazing site and sight!!

A 360 pic is the nearest I can get to actually being there at the moment, and I have to say that it is great how you can navigate around the pic to see ruins from different angles

    Nice work Sid

a little about the site itself, the temple is at the top of a small hill, so what you are seeing is the top of the hill, to access the temple you must go through a gate, pay and admission of 4Euro / $6 and make your way up to the top.

I was very lucky that day as there was no one up there but us, there is a guard shack behind the temple as you see it discretely tucked away so as not to be in the way.

the fence that you see is to keep people from getting to the columns, if im not mistaken the ability to actually walk through the temple was stopped in the early 70's to cut down on the wear and tear caused by mass numbers of tourists.

during the summer months it is very hard to walk around up there due to the number of people that come to see the monument. Many stay until sunset as its an amazing view from the hill.

Not a special camera, just special lens and equipment and software..
as for the graffiti, although you can not see it when you are close to the temple you can see where people have carved their names and the date they visited into the stone. Most of the inscriptions date back to the mid to late 1800's as well as early 1900's its interesting in a way and sad in another.

Actually you dont see my shadow in the picture, the shadow that you see is the column at the bottom of the picture, you can however see the cameras shadow which extends over the columns shadow.
