After removing all the nails, you gonna have to put them back. I had to removed a couple of the nails with the twisted base, they seem harder to put back than the regular ones.

Have you found a way to put back the twisted base ones?

well apart from the obvious, I'm asking that because after I put back the twisted nails in the same hole they came from, it's like the wood was more damage in the hole, they could be pulled by hand after that.

My method of pulling nails allowed them to twist as they come out. Not sure if that helped, but I installed a few nails back into the cell today, only driving them half way, to test out how my new laminant behaves (wanted to see if I will need to predrill). They were still quite difficult to pull again.

Regardless, I plan on dropping a length of round toothpick back into each hole before the final reinstall of the nails, just to make sure they're good and tight.

it may well be that the nails are a bit looser after having the square nails pulled out. if they feel loose to pulling with fingers, can dap a bit of glue, like goop, then they will not work loose.

as you hammer them back in, I would think that they would spiral like when first put in place. maybe when pulling they came out too fast and didn't have time to spin?

puting a shim in is a great idea.. but i would guess a round toothpick will be way to big

u might wana consider cheap flat tooth picks... there smaller

Doing the wood shim method is what I use. I learned that trick when I worked with my father as a trimmer/carpenter years ago.

I thought about the flat vs round, but figure since toothpicks are so soft and squishy, round would be okay.

Hmmm... now I have to go try it...

dip the toothpick in glue before inserting it for a stronger nail bond

Mopar is correct. The round toothpick was silly and out of control.
    Flat toothpicks it will be.
I would've gotten away with it too, if it hadn't been for you meddling kids.

No glue for me. For one, glue accidentally getting on my new artwork would be tragic, and for B, I may want to restore this thing again in another 50 years and would like to be able to get the nails out.

I put one of those round self-stick felt pads on the tip of my hammer so that it didn't leave any marks on the brass nail head when I tapped my nails back into place on the playfield (they are the same felt pads you use on the inside of cupboard doors to dampen the sound when the door closes - available at any hardware store, drug store, and even most grocery stores).

I picked this up half price at Harbor Freight and really like it. The nylon and brass faces are replaceable.

    Speaking of Harbor Freight.

I saw these over there a couple of weeks ago and thought that with a little modification they might work for pulling nails as well.
