Comet II ball launcher problem/Qs

My dearly beloved Comet II is giving me grief.

I have to pull all the way down on the ball launch lever to get it to load a ball for firing. If I do that, it does pretty well. I'm not sure how quickly I should be able to fire, but that's another question altogether.

Anyone know what I can do to fix that? If I want to fire softly, I have to fully cock the lever followed by backing off before releasing, and where's the fun in that.

Also, the drain from the payout tray to the cashout tray gives me grief quite often and I have to coax the balls to get them started flowing.

if u look in the back there is a wire that is connected to the shooter handle's shaft.. that wire swings over and pushes a plastic arm.. the distance from that wire to that piece of plastic should be near zero at rest...

adjust the wire so it nearly touches the plastic swing arm.. that way it will advance balls as soon as possable..

All the normal people in this house are in bed, so I don't want to test it extensively tonight. However, that wire was pretty far away form the arm, like 1/4". I adjusted it over and fired a couple balls. So far, so good.
Now I need to figure out the ball drain, and I'll have a perfect machine on my hands.

On the ball drain...

I have this problem on occasion and here's what I've found.

One one machine, I found a paper clip down inside the drain tubes. Believe it or not the balls would normally drain just every now and then hang up.
One another machine I found the slider bar to have dirt and crud built up on the track and would not allow me to open it all the way.
On another machine the balls would not drain at all... turned out to be a crayola in the tube.

On all of these issues, the resolution was to take apart the door components (as much as I could) and clean. You'll find the door components are quite simplistic and removing pretty simple. I've never removed components that were rivited however. There really shouldn't be anything at all to hamper the balls from flowing downward so I suspect you have something hiding in there.

Possibly a spider or japanese roach egg!
